Got back from crested butte are a few days ago. Had a great time kayaking and riding 4x4 roads but then blew up my cummins van trying to tow the speed limit.. Anyone know a decent diesel mechanic in IC area?

Only 2007 and later KTM EXC four strokes are 50 state legal. Depending upon how asleep your county DMV is, you may or may not get it through. If it's already registered in IA, you might stand a chance. I know people who have managed to get a plate and plenty who have been denied and I'm one of them.

Flip side is, register it in South Dakota. They will title anything, all they want is your money.

Iowa no longer allows converting off-road bikes...current registration, or not. When I moved here from IL in 2010 I wasn't allowed to register my 250EXC that was plated in IL. My neighbor moved here from Kansas and was denied a plate on a 450X that carried a current Kansas tag.

Visit the Enduro forums. There's many stories of Iowa DOT knocking on doors and seizing plates from ineligible bikes. If there's an off-road bike that's currently registered in this state, it's only a matter of time.

I think a couple of us from CR are going. We went last year. Its was a fun ride. However, I need 2whlrcr to clear a couple things up (if he can get off his Iowa rant). Do we need a plate and is there some type of Illinois offroad permit required?

Yes you need a plate and lights. Nobody is checking what the plate is registered too and doubtful if anyone is checking to see if your lights work. Just don't show up with a Maglight duct taped to your front fender.

The IL offroad sticker has not been passed yet...I'm riding my bicycle, so I don't need one anyway.
