Looking at Meoni's and other bikes torn down, there is very little difference between the 950/990 and the bikes they rode. You can also buy a KTM450 Rally so I'd have to say KTM pretty much is the only company making the actual bikes available to the public (in the USA). I know a few people raced the 640Adv but I think KTM had an actual Rally Bike that was different or at least based on the 640. If it weren't so expensive, half the fun would be building our own replicas like some of the guys are doing with the Transalp/African Twin hybrids and KTM Twins Rally kits. African Queens (http://www.africanqueens.de/) makes kits.
Have you seen Pete640's rally tank setup for the 950/990 KTM ? http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=611461
Yes I did. For me, I ended up getting a really good deal on the Safari 12 gallon tanks and didn't have to mess with the pipes. The upside, less weight on the sub frame, downside, She's a bit chubbier and I had to go way up on the front springs!
Hello Twinie, thanks for the "passion" but when you get photos from a website, even if they are "public", it would be polite to link to them directly and cite the source (in this case my website http://www.nightwings.org/Marathon/Marathon-home.html ) and not use these photos as if you collected them. Most of these were donated by the riders themselves or other websites Many thanks Gianpaolo
Great pics Twinie, thanks for posting. Nice website, Gian. Do you happen to have a larger version of this pic?
Just bumping the coolest thread back up to the top, it's taken me quite a few evenings to get through to the end, drooling over all of these cool pics.
How a Paris-Beijing winning SuperTenere sounds in 2013. The OWD8 also won the 1992 Paris-Cape Town Rally ('92 Dakar). <iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/video/embed?video_id=4891522810290" width="1280" height="720" frameborder="0"></iframe>
This thread is absolutely awesome. Take this pic from Russia. Creator of this piece of art wanted to race with his machine on the Dakar rally in the early 90`s, but was stopped by lack of finance (and chaos in the country). Full custom 800cc boxer twin, homemade chassis and fairings. Today this bike is just too old, underpowered and heavy for Paris-Dakar. Rally remained a distant dream for the man.
End of June in Italy we had the very first Africa Twin Marathon meeting. We had 10 original Marathon, about the half did the Dakar '89-'90-'91 You can find some photos here http://www.nightwings.org/Marathon/Marathon-meeting.htm
I can try to translate a big article about the machine, if you okay with my crappy english (1 lvl above the google ). But, i guess it will be too long for this thread. So take the pics instead. The next two is so tiny, what a shame, i cant find them in larger size. The article is here. http://38a.ru/show/pubs/festival-avtotjuninga-2006/fest2006_tun06_5
I was fortunate enough to attend the 30 year celebration of the Ténéré last week in Bonaduz, Switzerland and was pleased to find a number of Dakar bikes on display. I love the fact that this bike seems to have been kept in the condition that it was in at the end of the race and hasn't been restored.
