My friend took a trip to vermont on wed and stayed over so I rode up there today to meet him for lunch and we ride back to long island together. Lots of fun roads up that way...did about 400 miles today and bike is ready for first service ..but I think I will wait until monday to bring it in so I can ride it more this weekend..it may be a bit over the 600 miles by then...
Looks like KTM USA has switched to a new site, the list of accessories is much smaller now. <a href="http://www.ktm.com/us/supermoto/990-sm-r-usa/powerparts.html" target="_blank"> SMR Hard Parts from KTM USA</a> KTM Cycle Hutt has a nice selection too. <a href="http://www.ktmcyclehutt.com/ktm-parts/ktm-parts-search.php?ktm-motorcycle-parts=Please-Choose&year=2010&ktm-model=supermoto-990&fitment=StreetBikes-all" target="_blank">SMR Hard Parts from KTMCycleHutt</a> KTM Twins might have the biggest selection, and they have a good reputation. <a href="http://www.ktmtwins.com/ktm-950-990-supermoto-parts" target="_blank">KTM Twins 950 990 SMR Accessories</a>
Thanx Tomoto Now we have at least 2 choices of bash plates, George, if that backorder takes too long. I might also point out that the stock 990SM-T luggage-rack/grabhandle bolts right onto the SM-R (picture on page 1, post 1). Very handy, and doesn't look too bad. Check out that Orange hose kit on KTM Twins. Can anyone check to see if the SMT tankspoilers will actually bolt onto the SMR gastank for us ??? Can't tell with the part numbers. The price difference is huge for replacement purposes. *
I got everything ordered using multiple sources you provided..sw. motech makes both skid plates just the one has KTM logo..I ordered the other only because twisted throttle had one in stock.. since this is not my touring bike no hard luggage for me ...a dry bad and tank bag will get me through a weekend trip...
1200 Dorso does the SAME thing: Whack it and it eases into acceleration. SMR is way more tossable (tosser?) and rambunctious.
At small throttle movement, the S mode was hyper responsive. But as some mentioned here, whack it and it was underwhelming. Rolling on it felt powerful. But it didn't seem to like to play rough. It was in S mode. KTM FTW.
Yeah, the SM-R injection works great. It does exactly what you tell it. I really wanted the Dorsoduro to work as great as it looked, but it just didn't.
Pic of my Love... on my trip to Laguna Seca... who says you cant ride this bike 600+ miles straight.. G roads up 101 back... - Its amazing how well it did all environments ...Street,Freeway, Light Dirt
Just put on the Akro,s and took a two hour run out to the project. If you don,t have a aftermarket pipe on your bike get one today! Boosts the midrange and smooths out the trottle no end-I even recon it handles better with all that weight off the back end. Very well done Slovenia! Al ps not running any baffles
Any of you looking for body work for your 990smr's may want to check this out... http://hfcarbon.de/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=8_96&sort=20a&page=1 I've been well pleased with all the HF carbon parts I'm running on my 950smr. Excellent company to deal with as well. Shipping can be pretty spendy which is why I picked up nearly everything offered for my SMR at one time. When I was shopping to replace some damaged plastic last year, the carbon parts were often cheaper then the stock KTM parts. Worth considering if you damage something. Here are some pics: https://nattymo.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/KTM-Carbon/13120434_8rrUX I just installed a set of FP levers last weekend. Great levers, one of the few choices for the SM/SMR/SMT. See here: http://www.ktmtwins.com/fp-racing-ktm-950-990-supermoto-folding-brake-and-clutch-levers Happy modding! NM
Guys do you think its fair chance 990SMR vs Multi 1200? similar riding styles & skill of both riders... If not what would it take ? (Exhaust,Moto,Hooligan ) ? or more ? Buddy just got one "Multi"... I already know where this is going... (Most Riding is in tight stuff...)
Well if you could clone yourself, and one of you was on an SMR and the other a Multi? Lets see, the stock SMR is about 100 at the wheel (give or take) and the Multi is ball park 140!! at the wheel, I guess I wouldn't want to be you, on the KTM. But hey, fully tricked you can get close to, or at, a buck twenty at the wheel on your SMR, the other 20+ HP you will have to make up for in talent. (I just hope your buddy doesn't mod his Multi "Yikes") he could exceed 150 at the wheel and to make up 25-30 HP it would help to be a gifted rider. Remember the Multi cost a heck of a lot more, so you get what ya pay for. This argument will go on for ever (and no where)... obviously the handling traits of each machine could be the great equalizer here, and I've never ridden the Multi, so I couldn't say either way for certain. Maybe its a pig to throw around in the tight stuff who knows. Might be easier to get a new riding buddy.
I just bought a KTM smr and decided to bring it into some tighter twisty roads than I have near me so I packed up and headed to North Carolina where I got to ride with KTM Mike who also owns an smr. I spent the first day following him on some of the best roads you can find for this bike and when it got tight I got to see what a skilled rider like Mike can do. The next day he ride his KTM 690 and even with less horsepower he was quicker...especially when we met up with Jaimie James on his Yamaha R1 I got to see what talented riders can do So my experience is that a more skilled rider will be faster on anything and the extra horsepower of the Multi would only matter in a long straightaway which I have yet to find while riding down here. I have ridden the new multi and I believe I would be quicker on the KTM on everything except a straightaway. Both are excellent bikes and as long as everyone is smiling at the end of the ride it really doesn't matter who is faster.
Most important... who's friends with Jamie James? KTM Mike? How awesome is that, you got to ride with him. He's a legend, what a great opportunity. Very cool. Spent many a years cheering him on track side. And as the title of my post said, there is no substitute for talent. I think your last quote sums it up nicely, well put. cheers
Yeah, Jamie lives right over the mountain from me. I've been riding with him for years, and I work with him from time to time when he needs help. I too was cheering him on trackside at Daytona many years before we were neighbors. Now I chase him for hours down our local twisty roads. We live among some of the best twisty roads in the whole country. He's very busy building racebikes at his shop next to his house, so he doesn't get to ride as much as I do, and I still show him a new road every now and then. (Jamie let me ride the Craw-Daddy BEFORE it was on the cover of Cycle World . . . FAST!) George (TAZ1200) came all the way down from NY and rode with us this week on his 990SM-R, and he will be posting pictures on this thread soon. KTM Mike
George it was good to see you, if just for a minute. The next time the new will be off an maybe we can do some gravel, I already know I can't keep up on pavement.
