The available rims are over wide. From Joe's thread on ADV: Joe Pichler Adventurer Joined: Oct 2012 Location: Salzburg Austria Oddometer: 26 I'll use the Pirelli Sorpion Rally 90/90 21" and 140/80 18" The same tyres I've used on the 950/990 Adventure. I'll also change the rims to the same rims with I have used he last years. This is 2,50 inch on the rear and 1,85 on the front. I've been yust riding 300 km with the new bike, so its hard to say how many miles you can go on one tank. But a lot more then with the old one. In normal conditions I think it should be around 400 km or even more, but we'll see.
So what you're saying is that the difference between a 150/70-18 is so much over a 140/80-18 that you call it over wide? Sorry, I'm not following. The front tires are the same, so likely no discussion there, right? But as this isn't the KTM thread, we should discuss via PM or so.
Better engine & shaft drive than the Triumph Tiger? The 2013 will have to be a lot better engine/drive than the previous generation for this to be true. The only audio clip I've heard was on this thread from a bike show. When the guy hit the throttle the muffler sounded like someone was passing gas
Here is the link to 204 BMW pressroom photos of the new GS: https://rllemke.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/New-GS/25703460_CwhCzw#!i=2124379647&k=PGXSCn2 There may be a duplicate or two though. These are the full sized jpegs offered to the magazines. Much easier to see them with SmugMug than the press site BMW has. As a K1600GT owner, and having a strong interest in getting the new GS, I took the time with Photoshop to scale the power output of the new GS and K16 onto one image. (N.B.: The two different output lines for the K1600 shows the lower output when the engine is in Rain Mode.)
They're German......what else are they going to say?! Aiy.......more powder is not better for stress in thy shaft??? oser Amazing how much B.S. has been said about a bike nobodies ridden & crashed........give it two years and we'll see how AMAZING all these green points are in the hands of NON-subscription selling magazine editors and staff. As a counter point.....Honda hasn't changed the XR650 since 1901 and people still use it reliably off & on road.......What are it's Red points?! AND for the KTM guys......your new 1190 is being turned into a GS......19inch front tire?! Common people, don't you think all this is half amusing?? Just go ride......it's better for your fingers then typing.
Based on available info, I cannot tell if with the low suspension some of the safety/ride options (ESA, ASC, etc.) will be unavailable. Obviously, that is the case with the F700/800, but I don't believe that is necessarily so for this new 1200. Thanks.
Marketing hype is what sells bikes and creates a (free) promotional buzz on bike forums and in the riding community, not to mention bragging rights to early adopters / beta testers. That's what moto mags do.. pump and hype, heap praise and fluff any shortcomings, especially for products from big advertisers. I have no doubt that the new GS will be a very good bike. But there's so many good ADV bikes out now, it's given us a lot of choice and has put pressure on bmw. For example, for years, riders have been clamoring for factory cruise control on the GS, now that Triumph has it on their Explorer, the GS will be offered with it. That's good for riders like us who cross the north american continent on the superslab to get to the good riding, and none of us are getting younger!
Car wash testing ;-) I do the drive thru car washes all the time...good way to get your riding suit cleaned ;-)
I just got back from drooling on several bikes at the motorcycle show in DC this weekend. I cannot dispute that the 2013 GS looks great as does the Honda CB1100, the Triumph Street Triple and the white Super Tenere. There was a buzz that BMW refocused and aimed in the wrong direction by trying harder than ever to compete with the Ducati Multistrada. (Larger sport sized tires, 125 hp, a $1000 LED headlight, more weight, another Fisher-Price skidplate, ultra-expensive electronics, LED dash, etc) On a good note, the wet, multiplate clutch and water pump in the front of the motor are wonderful as is the quick and easily adjustable windsheild! I can't wait until the RawHyde Crew and the BMW Performance Center team get to rev, jump, submurge, wheelie, drop and beat the daylights out of them for a few months to see what they think. After I quietly voiced my concerns to a BMW employee answering questions about the GS and showed him some pictures of my GS caked in mud and laying on it's side, he smiled and summed it up by stating "BMW knows that 85% of riders are never leaving the pavement and will not treat their GS's the way you have." Really?! That not what your brochure/website says! I sincerely hope I am just paranoid and that this is the best GS ever. Not that I can afford one right now anyways. <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->
Personally my feelings are that the GS is much more aimed at the road (85%) market. If you want to get your bike off road and treat it mean I would wait for the GSA. I could be wrong but I think it will be more suitable and a bit more rugged. Separating the two models a bit further than a bit higher and a bigger fuel tank that they are now.
. Doubt that the new GSA will come in any lighter than the ordinary GS, to improve its off-roading. Still, it will leave room for the 800 twin to go to 900cc. And maybe, just maybe, a really lightweight 600 twin that would be something far more of a pleasure on dirt ~ plus having the ability for reasonably fast highway stretches. .
Not sure why you think the GSA is more suitable...basically the same bike but heavier and more top heavy. :huh Gotta go smaller, lighter, bigger front wheel, etc. if you want more dirt worthy.
With the dizzying amount of ride modes, traction control and ABS, linked brakes... BMW should have included one more item; The turn all this shit off and give me control of my bike button.
One does have to wonder about the reliability of skyhook suspension and other electronics gadgets as time passes. Guess that won't matter for those who trade up in 2-3 years when the next latest greatest incarnation is released.
