Yep. An old sock. Drop it in, wrap it around, fold the cuff to secure. Works great and the price is right. :rofl

Two subjects are very intertwined with much confusion:

A Track may be an Active Log that was actually recorded by a GPS. It is as accurate as he accuracy of the GPS plus the recording resolution (true with any digital measurement) which can be user set (I use Automatic, Most). Nothing to do with intent or maps, just Lon/Lat points on surface of earth of where the GPS was located when a point was recorded.

A Track may also be created with various draw tools. In this case it is what it is and has no corelation to actual roads or trails on the ground, only to the map it was created from.

In any case, when downloaded to a GPS, they are both fixed paths and will not change no matter how close you actually follow it.

I'm a bit new to the Montana, and with the help of this thread and the Wiki, I'm coming along.

Just today I accessed the Montana internal memory, uSD card and tried to delete all items. Then I loaded a couple segments of City Nav, made a route, and took the GPS out for a test ride. I had the GPS hooked up to my Sena head set, but I wasn't getting any turn by turn audio. (previously I was the day before). I took a look in settings and noticed that there are no longer any voice choices in the Voice Language menu. I also realized that the default Profiles, and the Vehicle options are no longer available. The menus for them are still there, but there aren't any selections to choose from.

Also, I somehow deleted the Global base map from the unit. Could this be the problem?

I was using 4.9, then went back to 4.7 to see if that would help. It didn't. So I went back to 4.9.

Web Updater doesn't give me any options to install any voices, or any further features.

I am installing City Navigator on the unit again thinking that this may solve the problem, but if I remember correctly, I think that I saw the voice, vehicle, and Profile options on the Montana before I loaded the map, so this may not help.

Ideally what I would like to do is get the unit back to factory new software settings with all features that should be included as such.

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks, everyone!

Edit: I am researching the issue further, and for the life of me I can't figure out how to reinstall the base map on the GPS. City Navigator is on there just fine, but the base map isn't. I looked at the unit with JaVaWa, and it said that the unit didn't have a base map installed (which we already know) and that the GPS probably wouldn't operate properly without it. "Well how would one go about getting that base map back on the GPS, JaVaWa?" Any ideas?

I've been struggling with why my CN NA & Europe maps wouldn't display on the Montana although I could see them in the proper directory using my PC. I searched the net extensively, and finally found a hint of a solution buried in a post.

What I found was that I had loaded too many map segments in some topo maps (they tend to have lots of segments). I deleted those and re-installed the two CN maps and they are now selectable from the Montana. It was a lesson learned for me, and I hope it will help someone else.

I think if you hook the unit up to https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/dashboard/dashboardScanDevice.htm?in=true&ni=ff it will scan the device and restore missing default files. Not sure if it will do the basemap, but worth a try. I know that when I deleted the factory dashboard files from my Zumo 350, it restored all of them.

Mine just sits on my kitchen table or desk when not being used, so doesn't even need a sock. :lol3

I do the same thing (luckily I live in a place where I don't have to worry about scumbag thieves stealing it) so the jacket thing wouldn't work for me either.

I was playing around with the unit some more this morning and noticed that all of my shortcut options are gone , as well as some of the apps.

I'm calling Garmin now to see what they say. Any further help here would be great in case they fail.

    Thanks, everyone!:D

Lot's of fail at Garmin, but in this case I think the fail is in the mirror.

Good luck though. Perhaps the files could be sent to the Montana dropbox from someone here.

Gone from where? Main Screen? Drawer? Which Profile?

Try this: Hook it up to the computer, view with Windows Explorer, go to Montana/Garmin/Shortcuts. If you see all the shortcuts you had before, then eject, power up, go to Setup for whichever profile you're interested in, Main Menu, click the options (three bars), then Setup Drawer, and start adding the shortcuts and apps back one by one with the plus sign in upper right corner.

Re-arrange them around to your needs, then select another profile (if you want) and do the same thing. It helps to make all your profiles have almost exactly the same main screen and drawers, you get used to seeing icons in the same place all the time.

THEN re-connect to computer and save all the Profiles, Shortcuts, and anything else you may ever need to a folder on the HDD you can always find, like: My Garmin/Montana/Garmin. I just mirror everything in the Montana except maps, which are put in a separate folder (the one for the SD card, which is where I put all my maps), so I can swap them in and out without having to use MapInstall.

I have seen this behavior from time to time. It usually takes me a while to remember that yes, I really did have that app or shortcut in that Profile...:huh
Then I just overwrite that Profile in the Montana with the known good one on the HDD.

    I'm using 4.7, I won't go to 4.9, I think it's too flaky.

If your Shortcuts have REALLY disappeared from the Garmin/Shortcuts folder, then you will have to rebuild them or get some from Dropbox.

    Good Luck!

Perhaps your best bet is to find someone with a Montana (is yours the 600, 650 or 650t?) and copy the files you need from their unit.

I made a snapshot of the internal memory as soon as I pulled the unit out of the box and can pretty easily send you a list of the files that come pre-installed. There's about 500MB's worth. Most of this is the voices and if you aren't concerned about all the foreign voices it's closer to 100MB. I could

I don't know if the basemap is locked to the unit.. if it is then copying it won't work but I'd guess it isn't.

A lot of your list is superfluous, or stuff added by yourself after the fact. Many of the voices/manuals in different languages are not necessary, and I recognize a lot of vehicle icons which are not in the original gps image.

I've trimmed the list to what I think is pretty much necessary.

This is the list out-of-the-box, brand new - nothing in there was added by me at that point. Notice the lack of waypoint, route or track files. In fact, the only .gpx file besides the four Garmin demo files is "current.gpx" and it contains nothing but a couple of track points from turning the unit on before it switched over to USB mode. I literally pulled the unit from the box when I got it new, plugged it in to the PC and copied the entire directory structure before ever doing a thing with the unit. The vehicle icons were already there. I thought it might be a good idea to be able to return the unit to new, out-of-the-box setup. I haven't needed to, but the 500MB or so seemed like good insurance.

I agree that a lot isn't necessary. I think the entire "Documents" directory could be tossed. You could easily toss all but one voice and they take up the most space...

He is more than welcome to any or all of the files copied from my unit when I pulled it from the box if he thinks it will help....

Well Garmin email support has suggested to me that I reinstall firmware version 4.9, which I have done. That however does not explain the loss of signal issues I have experienced under the older versions of the firmware. :huh

Will try it next week, and also take my external antenna along to see if this helps.
