Micro-Breweries and Twisty Roads Tour

I gave my oldest the Christmas gift of a ~4-5 day tour of Twisty Roads and Micro-Breweries. In the past we have done multi-day tours through VT and the ADKs, but so far he has not been south of PA on a bike. I am a big fan of the roads in WV and VA around the Blue Ridge.

Looking for suggestions of breweries we can string together with great roads this May-July.

I have enjoyed a number of beers at Morgantown Brewery in Morgantown, WV.

Piccadilly in Winchester, VA is good.

In Frederick, MD Brewer's Alley is one of my favorites and hit it every time I'm nearby.

Supposed to be a new brewery opening in Feb in Staunton VA too. Should be in full swing by the summer.

You could follow the BRP all the way down to Lynchburg and their is a decent pizza / brewery in downtown, near the James River. Jefferson Brewery

I'll second mountain state brewing, plus one of the owners, Willie, along with his father, have a bunch of beemers. Also, while on your way south or on your way back home, plan a stop at the http://www.elkcreekcafe.net/ in Milheim PA, great beers and great local riding, a good place to spend a few days exploring.

I'm headed up this way for New Years. I'll have to try this place.

Might be a bit South for you. But the missus and I did a micro brewery tour last 4th of July. Nine breweries in five days. Most were within walking distance of a place to stay.

Cities visited were Chattanooga, TN; Bryson City, NC; Ashville, NC; Knowville, TN; and Nashville, TN.

Had a great time from what I remember.

If you get to Asheville, NC don't miss "The Wedge". Pretty cool place! Good barbeque at a place called 12 bones too!

+1 GREAT beer, iron work art, etc. also visit the Thirsty Monk, they have a lot of great beers on tap. Really you could spend a few days just finding new beers in Asheville.... I did ;-)

I will have to disagree with the Picadilly in Winchester, VA being good. It blows for beer. They only brew two or three beers, and then they mix them together to make their other beers. Check reviews on Yelp. This is a place worth avoiding.

If going on the Blue Ridge Parkway, just a bit off of it are Devil's Backbone, Blue Mountain and Wild Wolf. The three are all within a couple of miles of one another. If you can only do one, hit Devil's Backbone as I believe they are a bit more highly rated than Blue Mountain (just a bit, BM is really good.)

If you don't mid going a little close to the DC area, there are a ton of great breweries, such as Lost Rhino.

If you go more into Central VA, there is Champion in Charlottesville and Starr Hill in Afton (its more of a production brewery now).

In Scottsville is James River Brewing Company. A great little place and a reasonably scenic ride to get there.

There is also Blue Lab in Lexington, VA.

And as above, you MUST go to Asheville!

+1 for this one as well! Great big open tasting room with darts, etc but most of all great beer!!!

Yeah, Asheville NC has several great places for good beer.Riding in the area is good but getting crowded.
Foothills brewing in Winston Salem is sorta on the way but the roads will drive you to drink.. If you're going to try and stay close to the BRP while traveling and want some interesting twisties head down Wards Gap Rd to Mt. Airy NC to the Old North State winery downtown (bar & grill also) for some regional craft beer (and decent food) and back up to the BRP on Pipers Gap Road. Some excellent roads in the area and drinkable beer. Galax VA has a sandwich shop downtown with some local brew that's pretty good but once again the roads are much better. Great riding, scenic, clean, wide open.
