    Ariels are great aren't they.

I had this lovely Red Hunter 500. made the big mistake of selling it a couple of years ago when I was swamped with bikes. regretted it since.

I sold it to one of the guys on this site. He's a photographer

Rob Farmer - always sad when you let one go and then realise how good it was. That looks like a great bike and with suspension and everything!

The last decent trip I did was 10,000 miles and the bike ran perfectly. I took enough oil to do several oil changes as the chances of finding a non detergent mono grade oil would be slim. As the filtration is poor, anything with detergent carries the dirt round the engine. Not one problem with the bike in all those miles.

The M20 / 21 was designed by Val Page as was the Ariels. All very strong and simple bikes. The temp got as high as 45 during that trip and the engine ran very hot. They were designed for 70 octane fuel so the modern stuff is a bit potent for them. The M21 is a sidevalve and they run even hotter so worth experimenting with mixing oil in with the fuel?

Taking it easy, the bike could do 90mpg so the range was as good as a GS. They are more comfortable than any modern bike I have ridden and can be fixed with simple tools. Could not think of a better adventure bike!

I met some guys in Italy on some interesting bikes. This was an ex military M20 shipped back from Egypt. Motor swapped to a tuned B31 and tank etc polished and lacquered. They reckon under £1,000 all in. Not original but I love the looks. Quick bike, raced em all over the mountains.

With the magneto now properly sparking again my friend told me to come by and pick up my Ariel HT5 trials mount.
Next time I'll bring the van!
