Possibly because they are also familiar with postie bike's engine. The same C-Series engine also used by two legendary bikes in Indonesia, used by goverment as Civil Servant service motorcycles. Honda Win100 and Honda Astrea Grand. It has been years since discontinued but really, despite C-Series build that looks like water pump engines because of their front combustion chamber, good engines will roar forever...

I’m finally on a ferry to somewhere. It’s a stifling hot day very reminiscent of the build-up to the wet season in Darwin. Another storm in Kupang yesterday so it looks like the wet weather gear will be getting more use soon.

I forked out an extra 50,000rp for a bed in the VIP Room

Where the music from the PA system struggled to be heard over the audio from the TV all bloody night. Even with earplugs wedged so far into my ears they were touching each other the noise was incredible. This is something I’ve encountered on all of my previous travels in Asia, what is it with the noise pollution?
Should arrive in Larantuke around 0500 and then taking a small boat to the nearby island of Solor to attend a Koke Bale ceremony at Lewonama village.
I was sitting up on the top deck reading my Kindle, it was much cooler up there as the sun was setting and not too crowded. A group of young ladies all in the same T Shirts were taking lots of pics of each other and in the end all crowded together for a group photo. They asked a couple of locals to take a photo for them but couldn’t get any takers so I volunteered. That set off a bit of pandemonium as they all then wanted a photo with the funny looking foreign bloke. Anyway, they were all graduated mid-wives from a Kupang institute on their way back to Flores.

Just previous to that I’d been talking to a bloke (Simon) from the same university who was on his way back to his home island to take part in and record the ceremony I mentioned above. One of the distinct advantages of solo travel is that locals are far more prepared to approach and interact with a lone foreigner than they are with two or more. Looking forward to this it could be pretty interesting.

Ferry arrived on time and unloading was pretty quick, then down to another smaller port for a much smaller boat to Solor.

We were hosted by Simon’s uncle Alfonse and family. This could described as a very humble abode but it’s full of love, happiness and laughter. I had a great time there and conducted a few English lessons with the kids, showed some cartoons I have on the laptop (a big hit) and attended ceremony feasts and dances.

I have plenty of video of the ceremony dancing but no still pics. It was pretty fascinating stuff but also a little intimidating. The arak was getting passed around and people were getting into the mood for dancing, the trouble is that there were more than a few dancing with bloody big blades dangling in hands. I stayed until about midnight and then made my way to bed. I’d set my inner tent up on the porch. Alfonse loved my tent and therma-rest mattress.
The hall. This was built to help unify the various tribes and villages in the area and was what the ceremony was all about. The undercurrent I detected was that there were disputes about land ownership that had been ongoing for some years.

They danced and sang all night so slept most of the day until we departed on the 2pm boat for Larantuka.

And promptly set off for Maumere, me on PB and Simon on the bus. Simon is visiting his wife and kids here and has asked if I will meet with them.
Found a cheap Hotel in Maumere with the assistance of the local police. It was dark when I got into town and a bit chaotic with traffic. I saw a huge police compound, stopped and asked directions. A senior looking bloke came out and directed one of the younger officers to escort me to my hotel. You can’t ask for more than that.

That's a great job on the house at Balibo. I hope many visitors follow in the tracks of Postie Bike and make the effort to visit.

Agreed Blek. I keep hearing words like "Old Style" and "Strong Bike" so the genre is well regarded. I'll be looking for a new rear tyre pretty soon and probably put PB in to get a general tune and service. Might wait until I get to Sumbawa if you have a good place I can take it too there?

I do my overhaul and tuning myself, but since you are using Honda and if you need to, just go to AHASS service, the official Honda service point. Their workshop building looks like this.

They have fixed price and certificated engineers and since there is no modification on postie's engine, you can count on their original Honda spare parts if you need to replace something, since its spare parts are same with astrea series and supra series.

You can find such workshops everywhere in town everywhere in Indonesia.

Postie is categorized as small bike. Complete tuning including the original Astra Lube 4000km Lubricant Oil should be no more than 100k rupiahs at most.

Hey Luna, you should have been there old mate, after that photo of the midwives was taken, pandemonium erupted. Now I have a small inkling of what it must be like to be famous, young, rich and good looking.

Dropping the bike off in the morning for an oil change and general check up. they got a bit concerned that they didn't have the specifications for the CT110. I told them that it's just a Honda 110 engine and should be the same as all other 110 engines. They settled down when I told them I had all the specifications anyway. Thanks for the link to the pic, it was a great help.

Hi RDT 953 , I subscribed to your thread a few weeks ago , and just caught up with everything that you have been up to in the mean time .
Amazing pictures and story , I will follow it with great interest .
I have also been on a 5 000km trip on Posties over the past few weeks , but mine has a Sidecar on it as you can see on the Oz Sidecar FB-page . After looking at your video and comments on some of the roads , how do you think this little rig would do over there ?
The recent trip to Vic and back to QLD was basically just a test-run for exactly what you are doing , we are thinking of riding all the way back to Thailand . The debate continue on whether to take the Posties or something a little bigger , maybe a Honda 200 AG , or even our BM 800 GS's , which I feel may be a bit heavy for this trip , your learned opinion on this subject will be much appreciated ?

The road is pretty good and very scenic,it follows the coast for a bit and then climbs up into the mountains again for sweeping views of the coast.

I've seen one other hack so far and that was on what I think was a Honda 125. Choice of bike would depend on where you intended going. My little PB with my weight and about 40kg of luggage has handled everything thrown at it so far but I don't think it could have dragged a sidecar over some of the roads I covered in East Timor especially on the south coast and through the mountains there.
Of the 3 bikes you mention my pick would be the 200 AG as it would probably share many parts with other bikes seen in this part of the world and will have a definite power advantage over the Postie. In fact I saw a 200 AG for sale at the Super Bike races in Darwin just before leaving and I was very tempted to do a quick change of bikes.

Headed out of Maumere and on to Moni to visit Kalimutu and it's 3 lakes. A very scenic road through the mountains and again with pretty good roads most of the way. There's a major project underway here to upgrade the main road through Flores. The land here can be pretty unstable in the mountains with land slips in the rainy season.

Moni is a little strip of a tourist town with plenty of choice for rooms and food.

Unpacked, changed into walking clothes and took a walk to the waterfall to watch backpackers risking their holiday for walk over the rickety bridge.

Worth mentioning here is the dinner I had. I was approached by the restaurant owner to come to eat at his establishment, the "Bamboo Cafe". He had a guestbook in his pocket with notes from previous patrons and it all looked very positive so I took a punt, put down a deposit and booked a place at the table.
The food was fantastic, it's a set menu consisting of mountain rice cooked with aromatic leaves, a vegetable soup of freshly picked from the garden vegetables and forest herbs and spices. A plate of cooked banana flower and other local fruits and the main dish of chicken cooked with limes in bamboo.
At about $8.50 it has the be one of the bargains in the world for food lovers.

Then off to bed for an early start in the morning for the climb to Kalimutu.

Love it! Looking forward to more. I really enjoy when people include food and accommodation and their prices. I'd like to see the inside of some of these guest houses and bungalows.

Welcome and thanks for the comments. I wasn't sure how that sort of stuff would go over so it's good to get a positive comment about it. For me the food is a huge part of the trip, I love finding good quality fresh food with the special local flair as described in the Bamboo Cafe experience. That dish would command prices north of $50 a sitting in Australia and here I had it for less than a fifth of that. In Maumere I had a soto ayam from a mobile warung (chicken soup from a food cart) and a pancake filled with crunchy peanut butter and honey from the warung next door. It was all delicious and cost a measly $1.50 all up, $1 for the soup and 50 cents for the pancake with a couple of small fried bananas thrown in.

Up at 0330 for the run up the mountain with PB stripped of all luggage it was pretty much in race trim. Got up there nice and early and the sky over the mountain was crystal clear with bright shiny stars twinkling away however off in the distance were a couple of big thunder heads with flashes of lightning every so often. Headed up the mountain and waited for the dawn as the clouds and other visitors arrived seemingly together.

A couple of enterprising locals set up shop with tea and coffee on sale for $1 a cup.
He could have found a small knife to peel ginger. It must have taken about 2 seconds for someone to quip "that's not a knife" Crocodile Dundee immortalized with one line.

For no other reason than a really cool name I picked Bajawa as the destination for the day. Another good day of riding on some very scenic roads. Lots of roadwork going on along this stretch. Especially up in the mountains where there have been recent land slips.

I stopped at a small restaurant for a coffee and met some of the road-workers, one bloke who turned out to be an engineer spoke very good english and told me that it was a major project being funded by $$$ from Australia. I joked that in that case he should pay for my coffee, he was quick to say that the money would be paid back.

The coast along these parts is all black volcanic sands.

I found my way to Ende and then after a few wrong turns and plenty of directions found my way out again and continued west.
I didn't spend any money in Ende but didn't think this gesture on leaving towns was warranted.

The road leaves the coast after Nangaroro and heads up into the mountains for vistas of terraced hill sides full of rice.
