In at the (very) Deep End.. A Norton Story.

Whoo hoo... I got some forks today, a real beat up rusty set of "long" early roadholders. Really they are a bit early for my frame, as the sliders have a different mounting bracket for the front mudguard (fender) struts.
Early sliders have a vertical bracket, later ones have a horizontal bracket, but as the object is to get it on the road first and formost, little things like this can be sorted at a later date

That's Dick Klamfoth. It's on the beach at Daytona, and he held AMA #1 at the time. Probably 1952 or 3

Well the forks have been stripped, checked, and had a couple of thread repairs done, the sliders are now away for poishing the rest will be vapour blasted, and then sent for paint.

I also won these on the bay at the weekend...



need to try to find some wheels now, well Kempton is this weekend, so I shall see what's there. I also have to pick up my 350 Bullet Enfield on Saturday..... did I mention that?

Just been out to pick up my roadholder fork sliders from the polisher they be extra shiney I also just collected my engine cases, oil tank, gearbox, and rocker cover.
And I also just got a set of springs for the plunger rear end, with half a set of spring covers...

Picture update as promised...



It doesn't look like much is happening, but it is mostly finding parts at this time. My first priority is to get the front and rear suspension. And then look for a set of wheels.
As it happens, the laydown gearbox, although looking scabby, does seem ok, as you can select a gear or two, and all seems to be free. The engine cases are in great undamaged condition, but may well get used as a trade, as they are model 19 cases (600cc) and I would like to use ES2 cases, (500cc).

I take my hat off to you Kev. That looks like scrap to this tinker. Looking forward to seeing how you tackle this.

Must be nice to be able to hit a buncha places within 100 miles with a hope of finding what you need. Here i'd be lucky to source enough Norton single parts within 3000 miles.

I've wanted a Norton single for many years, but the urge really struck when i got to start hanging around Bob & Co. Getting to ride everything from a '27 CS1 to a '63 Manx has spoiled me. Too bad they are all out of reach for me.

I know I am in a lucky position, having friends who are into these things, it took me over a year to find a frame, I had all but given up on the idea when this frame came along. Now though, it is do-able, I have a nice set of long roadholders here, that I have spent the afternoon stripping down, ready for blasting and paint.

I have been watching an oil tank on eBay, a genuine Inter wrap around tank, and I was sniped in the last second only thing was I bid £400 ($625) :eek1 and still lost, so how much for a fuel tank then?:huh

Wish i could help, but the bike is in Maryland, and I'm in Alabama. Bob doesn't take that particular bike to the Ahrma races very often, usually they only bring the '37 Inter and the '62 Manx. I probably won't see them again till late spring, doubt I'll get up to MD this winter.
I'll see if I can get hold of Bob's son to ask if he can take pics.

BTW, how close are you to Wisbech (spelling?). Stu Rogers is probably one of the most knowledgeable Norton single guys over there. He's very approachable and a fun guy to spend time with.

I know your friend Bob. I ran AHRMA tech for some years, and he was always at Daytona.

Well it is starting to look like a Norton again now, as I start to collect bits and pieces, I shall take some pictures tomorrow, of the progress so far, although most of the parts collected so far have their own issues:huh but nothing that can't be fixed
