You make perfect sense... Besides giving the bike higher gearing a larger OD tire has a couple othertraits that make it preferable to me:
#1 A larger tire rides will ride a bit smoother on choppy roads as it rolls over the pockets a little better as to where a small tire may fall into them...

#2 A larger tire is less prone to pass nugget shock through to the rim in the form of dents...

For short legged people running a set of low profile tires can be an advantage by lowering the seat height up to an inch... The Mitas EO 9 in 130/80 x 18 combined with the 90/90x21 is an example of a tire set that will drop the seat height considerably...

I am looking to replace the 2.10 front rim on my 06 Adventure with a 1.6 W rim. Will the stock spokes work for the 1.6 rim? If not where is a good source for a spoke kit?

Any regrets going from the 2.1 to the 1.6, handling wise?

Thats only true with a 1:1 final drive and same size sprockets. Thats something we can get into but for the sake of your point in tire size vs speed at given rpm its of no consequence.

I also changed 2.1 rim on my 06A, but decided to go 1.85
OEM 2.1 Behr rims were really a shit
    [IMG]
after going to 1.85 I didn't feel any difference in handling on road, but much better on off road
Regarding to spoke kit I've chosen set of Twalcom reinforced spokes (they were the same as for LC8 9x0A)

Ummm, nope, it's true for just about every wheel ever made. Nothing to do with chain and sprockets. If you can show me a (solid of course) wheel that does otherwise, we'll have a breakdown in physics...

oooops !!!!! my bad i read axle and somehow thought crankshaft, engine rpm to wheel rpm, what a dope:rofl

though technically we may still have a breakdown in physics since the axle does not rotate, so i guess if we want to be correct we can say the hub and wheel rotate the same, or outer bearing race and wheel:D

I went to a 1.6 a couple of years ago. But I'm such a crap rider I wouldn't have noticed any difference in handling.

I used the stock spokes and have had no problems on all sorts of surfaces (except ice / snow).

One thing to remember is that the Adventure hub/rim is "indexed" a different way to most Jap / Euro bikes. For more info, see here:

    then see posts #620, #621 and #622.

Absolutely, in the case of most motorcycles, it must be a 'virtual' axle, or as you suggest, hub or outer race. I chose axle only because it's relatively easy to visualize. And don't worry, no one will criticize a thinking lapse in between Christmas and New Years! :freaky

Very nice. Someday I will ride the real desert. We have sand but just not much open area. Below is the closest area I have to "pretend" I'm riding the dez.:1drink

This is an area of Michigans upper penninsula that was logged out years ago, burned so hot it killed all of the vegitation even below the surface. Not much re-grew.

    Kingston Plains.

This is another area I want to experience on a bike. Really big hills or mountains. Upper midwest does not offer me any "pretend" areas for this.:D

Vids help in the dead of winter here when you can't (shoulder) ride the ice.

Lake Superior is just a few miles away so this area gets huge lake effect snowfalls.

May is a good month for the UP. Otherwise heated vests come out March-ish for road riding.

Move south? That idea gets questioned more and more every year.:1drink

Actually compared to wide open sand dunes the U P sand trails are more difficult because you only get one line.

I have ridden Death Valley, Colorado, and all over Michigan. The Upper Penn rates right up there in awesome off road.

My buddy from California comes every year to ride in Michigan and loves riding the U P.

I'll ride anywhere I can, but I really enjoy 2 tire track stuff like in your photo. Moab Utah as hundreds of miles of that sandy 2 tire track roads. I try to go every spring if I can.

Go to Ace Hardware and look at the Ace Rustolium.

One of the grey colors is close.
