I rode down to Nuevo Laredo about 10 days ago and rode around town quite a bit. On the way back the Border Patrol guy was talkative but he did comment that he was surprised to see me by myself and that usually touring riders show up in groups. But yeah, I have gotten the comments about whether or not I was aware that the State Department and Texas had advised against riding in the very places where I was at. We did Dr. Arroyo to San Antonio de Pena Nevada to Zaragoza to Aramberri in Dec. The 31 miles from San Antonio de Pena Nevada to Zaragoza took 2 hours, but it was fun. Elevations from 4500' to 9500'. Glad to hear. It really is a nice area to see. In Zaragoza there is a national park with some awesome waterfalls. La vela de la novia if I remember correctly. I dont remember what it costs to get in, but it makes for an awesome picture with the bikes in front of it. I camped in the park one night. Sent from my Samsung Note 10.1
It looks like next Monday for the Monarch butterfly run. We're passing by the volcano "Nevado de Toluca" and I was wondering if anyone had been to the top? The guide says 17k of unpaved road up to the top, but I'm trying to see if my lunatic buddy on his 800 Intruder will end up with his spine sticking out the back of his neck? The route (Maybe): The volcano: Goat track or not? Anyone know? By the way, there's 3 of us so far. If anyone else is interested, PM me. We plan to leave around 9 am from Cuernavaca.

Well, I mostly just lurk, but seing as these are my stomping grounds I thought I could chip in my 2 cents. As Schizzman says, do check out flyngdutchman's RR: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=20273276 That being said, that route is a fairly smooth, wide gravel road. It becomes rutted during the rainy season, but the last few months have been pretty dry, so it should be in good shape. The Intruder's suspension should handle it Ok. However, Google tells me an Intruder is a carbureted bike, so depending on how it's jetted it could really struggle to make it up there. My old Honda Interceptor would huff and puff riding the paved roads at the base, I don't think it would have pulled 3rd gear up the gravel road. This is taken on a different route up than the one you'll take, but it works as a reference of about the worst surface you can expect: Clouds for reference on how high it is, mall crawler to prove it should be easy for any bike, dog for scale on the size of the rocks
Doug's carbed cruiser was fine at near 11,000ft over the pass from Acocomola to Saltillo Lafragua, he should be ok. The Mystery Rider is still shopping and I'll be working. Nice elevation for the ride!
Since Viagra reportedly only works for about 10% of the men who admit to using it and some percentage of that group are lying I would guess that the ingredient to which the good Colonel refers is a hefty portion of good ole Texas buuulsheut. But once again I digress from the ever critical safety issues... bad spelling seems to be a particularly hazardous activity here and opens one to deep ridicule.
