Check out page 8-4 and 8-5 of the Honda Manual. Claims the rocker arms are stamped with a code and should be in the specified spots - be my guess that they may have gotten mixed up.

Thanks Walter, that was the info I was looking for. The 65 watt liner will have to suffice.

I was concerned that you ajusted with cam lobes up, even with the fly wheel T showing up

this can be done, buddy of mine did it, rolled over one full turn there so loose you need to check them with the end of wrench, anyway you got book so you got it now, good luck

father9 - I'm in the process of installing a Web Cam, so I have the top end apart. Here's a picture of the rockers. Hope this helps.

    looks familiar.

i definitely have the rockers on top of the subs.

pretty sure the locations are correct.

    The things concerning me are:

    NO decompression TICK

    and

    Screws sticking way up.

I think they are the same problem.

Probably an 180 indexing error on the the cam install???

Looks like I'm going back in :becca

Easy to tell if the cam is in right. Look in the inspection covers with the engine at TDC and see if the lobes are UP or Down...

BTW... It takes 2 complete revolutions (720') to cycle a 4 stroke engine valve train

What about the spark part, is there an easy way for pop to tell without pulling side cover????????

If you pull the plug boot and stick a screwdriver up inside where the plug connects, then, while holding the metal screwdrvier shaft, crank the engine.

If your eyeballs pop out and roll across the floor, then you've got plenty of spark. If it only hurts like hell, then you may have a weak spark issue. If you feel nothing, then you've found your problem. :rofl

    Hey father9,
I am knee deep in my XRL right now as well. The top end is apart while I wait for my piston to arrive. I am with Screamin Injin... I think the only way your rockers could stick up that far is for the rockers or sub-rockers to have been installed incorrectly. There is no way the rotation of the cam can cause them to poke out like that if installed correctly. Now they might be 180 out of synch, but that wouldn't cause your problem. The schematics from the manual show some specific stampings on the rockers and sub-rockers that have to be put in 'just so.' I can scan it for you if you don't have it.

On another note, are there any gurus out there that can answer this question: Does the pulse generator in the right crank case fire a spark at every TDC, regardless of whether it is at the top of the compression stroke or the exhaust stroke? I ask because the manual only states that the crankshaft must be spun to TDC when you place the cam (lobes down in the compression position) and install the cam chain. It does not specify setting the 'correct' TDC. If the pulse generator only fires every other TDC, then you would have to verify that it is at the top of the proper TDC when installing the cam, would you not?

Sorry for the novel... never been this deep in a motor before.

    Cheers,
    Grayjet

Your second chapter is exactly what was bugging me as I installed the cam. TDC seems realtive - as in WHICH TDC.

Looks like I'm taking this thing apart again so it would be wise to verify the info .

Taking the rocker assembly off tonight to inspect install.
