Some sad displays lately - there is a rule that you can't remove your own helmet before a fight, so two guys gently tipped each other's lids off at the start of the fight.

The only death ever in an NHL game was at the end of a fight when a guy fell and hit his head, sans helmet, decades ago.

If all you can find to cheer for in a game with such skill and finesse is the sideshow staged fighting, perhaps you should find another sport to watch.

Now that is what I am talking about - real old time hockey!!

Back in '97 or '98 I was in grad school at University of Mew Mexico, and I was teaching ESL as well. Our program centered on language learning as well as American culture, so we did lots of extracurricular stuff--festivals, baseball games, and a CHL game between the NM Scorpions and the Amarillo Gorillas (not shitting you). We had students from Malaysia, Zaire, China, Greece, Brazil, Tibet, and on and on.

Then a fight breaks out. The lights go out on the ice except for the two fighters. Then the music starts: "I love you, you love me . . ." the fucking Barney song.

That's the only thing our students took away from that game.

I have another story for later--one involving my girlfriend at the time, from Quebec, a Habs-Canucks game, and Larry Robinson getting clocked partially because of my girlfriend. But that's for later.

Why aren't all these players arrested for assault?
