Help. I need to get my '08 990 Adventure to a tuner / dyno and get the FI dialed in. Can anyone point me to one that has experience with this bike in the Dallas area even up to a 2 or 3 hundred mile radius of here?
I am ASSuming you want the throttle jerk fixed. Twice as far as your parameters but I would make the effort to go here. Highly recommended. http://www.power-tripp.com/Main.html Closer to you. Pay attention to what they say on this page. Don't know for sure if they do KTM's. http://www.af1racing.com/store/Scripts/shop_services.asp Get a garauntee that they will smooth the throttle out. If not the first time on the dyno that a re-tune is free. More scandalious operators will not tune all parts(or can't) and will charge you for the re-tune cause they couldn't do their job right the first time.
That's a small part of it really, that and the lag rolling on the throttle at around 4,500. Plus I've put on Wings, did the canisterectomy / SAS, will be changing the air box to the CPR and maybe the RC8 stacks. My mileage is in the toilet also. I have a Tune ECU cable on the way to look at and reset some other parameters but want a pro to get the A/F right and whether or not to use the O2 sensors. I had a Power Commander III on it for a while but that was a nightmare trying to use the canned maps and am back on the stock base map using the O2's. I have called on some locals but get the "umm, err, KTM you say?" Just not a reassuring feeling from any of them. I'm perfectly capable of screwing it up on my own for free. I may get back to the Tune ECU thread after I get the cable and try some things but I really want to get a good baseline from a pro first.
If you are going to get the CPR filter I'd wait on the tuning. Chris has a custom map that an inmate up in Washington had done. Try it first and at least use it for a base map.
I had my bike tuned by PowerTripp and he did a good job and has worked on a lot of Adventures and RC8's. One of the most important items to correct is how much the timing is held back in the lower gears. I recall he added 15 degrees to make it the same total advance as the higher gears and it never pings. Well worth the trip! It was 11 hours for me.
Oh no, I wouldn't have any tuning done until the CPR was fitted. Sorry I wasn't very clear on that and the stacks are just an idea at this point. You mentioned Chris has made a map. Is that somewhere in the GIANT Tune ECU thread? Ah, nevermind, Chris at CPR. I see there is no map available for Tune ECU with filter and aftermarket exhaust. Thanks for the tip to PowerTripp. I have not spoken with them yet but the website is impressive along with your recommendation. I travel a lot for my employer and if I can't find someone local hopefully I can get a job in that area and trailer the bike to him and drop it off then pick it up on the return.
Is Power Trip the only guy that has experience with KTM and super tuning the LC8? Say it's not so. Being on the west coast, and of course, the center of the universe where is our "power trip"? My 2008 990 Adv has always run great except for the throttle thing at low speed. I live with it but if I knew of a tuner that is not thousands of miles away my bike would be in the tuners hands. I know Tahoe racer is a "gyro gismo" with his bike but I'm not. Mater of fact, tuning, I think, is like playing the violin, it takes lots of practice. I'm not in practice and I know the pitfalls of do it your self tuning and it's not for me. Now the confession is over : and I still am looking for the west coast tuner. Any one out there?
I had a similar situation. 4500 roll-on had a horrible half second lag and a jerky throttle both on and off were the biggest issues for me. Nels Byerdorf of 2 wheel dynoworks completely cured both problems. It wasn't one of those "I think it's better 'cuz I just spent a bunch of money so I'll try to convince myself that it was worth it" type of deals. The problems simply disappeared after his map was installed. According to the dyno chart I also picked up 4 or 5hp! His dyno is built into a trailer but I don't know if he travels your direction or not. You might want to contact him anyway. It's possible he knows someone in your area who can work similar magic. 2wheeldynoworks@gmail.com
