I tested it twice, even now. File name is R_0A11_RM_0213_R1200GS_07.pdf, but when you open the file, the pictures are all of the new LC GS. Manual was written on 10/2012.

They also recommend BP gas. Can we include a gas war in the same thread?

Gets to the same link as mine. It's the K50 GS USA. Once you accept, open it and you'll see the new LC GS.

Someone asked what the Onboard Computer Pro adds. Sorry about formatting, no matter how much I edit it pops back to this hard to read format.

    This is in the manual:

    with onboard computer Pro
OE The following information is additionally displayed using the onboard computer Pro:

    Automatic odometer (TRIP A)

    Current fuel consumption (CONS C)

    Current speed (SPEED)

In the case of standard equipment, the following values can be displayed and selected per push of a button:

    Outside temperature (
    EXTEMP)

    Engine temperature (ENGTMP)

    Average consumption 1 (
    CONS 1)

    Average consumption 2 (CONS 2)

    Average speed (Ø SPEED)

with Tire Pressure Control (TPC/RDC) OE Tire inflation pressures (option) (TPM/RDC)

    Date (
    DATE)

    Oil level indicator (OILLVL)

    with onboard computer Pro
OE Onboard electrical system voltage (VOLTGE)

with onboard computer Pro OE Stopwatch overall time (ALTIME)

For all of you that are not too much into the German language then here is the dot com link to the user manual for the new 1200GS LC:

    http://www.bmw-motorrad.com/com/en/.../services/manuals/manuals_main.html&notrack=1

Click on the plus next to "R models" and chose either "0A01 - R 1200 GS" for the european version or "0A11 - R 1200 GS (USA)" for the US version.

Please, note that you have to read this from beginning to end in order to be qualified to take delivery of a brand new 1200 GS LC. Technical questionnaire will be mandatory at the dealer before you get the key for your new toy :D

Also in the manual, the upshift indicator ("eco shift light") is user configurable from the multifunction display buttons on the handlebar.

After a quick look at the user manual I found these interesting things (well at least interesting for me and maybe some of you):

    1) Anti-theft alarm (DWA) can be set to be automatically activated 30 secs after the ignition is turned off. User managed.

    2) The BMW Motorrad Navigator can be setup to automatically receive the figure for residual range possible with the fuel remaining in the fuel tank, so it is no longer necessary to enter this value into the BMW Motorrad Navigator.

    3) The BMW Motorrad Navigator sends time and date to the motorcycle. No more fiddling with setting the date and time. Accurate data is provided by the GPS. Nice and easy. User managed.

    4) The BMW Motorrad Navigator can be secured against uauthorized use with a four-digit PIN. If this function is activated, while the BMW Motorrad Navigator is cradled on the motorcycle and the ignition is switched on you are prompted to add the motorcycle to the list of secured vehicles. If you answer "Yes" at this prompt the BMW Motorrad Navigator saves the VIN of this vehicle in its internal memory. A maximum of five VINs can be saved in this way. Subsequently, the PIN does not have to be entered when the BMW Motorrad Navigator is switched on by ignition ON while cradled in any of these vehicles. If the BMW Motorrad Navigator is removed from the vehicle while switched on, a security prompt asking for the PIN to be entered is issued. User managed. Any future sale of GPS cradles from Touratech stopped just here.

    5) Oil level difference between MIN and MAX is now approx. 0.95 liter. On the former 1200 GS (K25) is was approx. 0.50 liter. The increased volume provide more flexibility regarding the requirement for topping up oil on longer trips.

    6) The handle on the provided screwdriver can be used for removing the engine-oil filler neck. Smart. One less tool to loose in the jungle.

    7) Tyre pressure monitoring RDC has three tyre-pressure ranges:

    - Within pressure tolerance (no warning light)
    - Close to pressure tolerance (yellow warning light)
    - Outside pressure tolerance (red warning light)

Question: How is low pressure managed when going off-road with knobbies? Standing on the pegs looking at a flashing red light all day sucks.

    8) Customizing the LED screen is nice.

I haven't really found anything that makes me hate this bike yet.

Anything that was a possitive surprise for you?

    Max :-)

    Stay below 19 mph?

I don't see where you can disable the light, short of electrical tape...

On the off-road videos that have made the rounds, there are flashing lights all over the place from all the off-road settings, etc. It does seem like a distraction for anything more than a short distance.

And I was going through the things manual allows us to do ourselves.
Generally we are sopposed to: Check X. Have the defect X rectified as quickly as possible by a specialist workshop, preferably an authorised BMW Motorrad dealer.

    But we can:
    - Top up oil and coolant
    - Remove wheels (advised to get it checked afterwards by a specialist workshop, preferably an authorised BMW Motorrad dealer)
    - Exchange lightbulbs (in case of LED ....quickly as possible by a specialist workshop, preferably an authorised BMW Motorrad dealer)
    -Change the air filter
    - Change the battery
    - Change fuses (BOTH of them :rofl)

The extended toolkit is avaliable at your local, friendly BMW dealer.

They have so much trust in us ! :D

we are prepping our demo today, will get a quick spin in hopefully before the rain ruins the weekend :cry

    my first impressions
-boy, that new battery location looks nice and low
-under the front end is very clean, not a lot of clutter, looks easy to access for maintenance
-the windshield winder is super clever
-the fire blue color is kinda, meh, but will probably be a hit anyway
-power socket is up in the dashboard which is better for me
-swingarm casting looks very minimalist and the rear subframe is gonna be sexy (HP2 enduro sexy) once that passenger seat and footrests are removed

    1) Actually alarm could be set to auto-activate after 30 seconds before too (I have it like that). It was a complex procedure with the control buttons though. Also one setting I cannot find in the new GS is to disable the move sensors (for example in a boat), which was possible in older GS. I guess now you just need to disable the whole alarm.

    5) Not sure if this is good.

Indeed there is an extended toolkit as extra (made for cug probably, I hope they transparently insert it in his bike - I will still bash him if he gets it). Possibly still fits somewhere in the bike.

Interestingly enough we now have (two) fuses. Not sure what this means.
Maybe CANBUS wasn't that smart after all.

Anyway. Reading the manual, I can sum it up that this bike is a TOTALLY different bike than previous GSes.
Needs super-unleaded (AFAIK my 07 needed regular unleaded) and takes full synthetic oil.
Now to find the official service/oil intervals somewhere...

Also the first on to finish running-in, please also find the real v-max?
(also 0-100kmh is not mentioned any more... wonder if this is a bad thing)
(because yes GS is not a sport bike, but it is like playing stupid to deny you also like power when you get a bike of 125HP)

This "extra" depending on your background and taste, can look from cool to stupid. From "one more thing to break" to "one more bling bling for my lady".

    1) When your bike is on a ferry then the anti-theft alarm may not be that important. To run away with your bike is difficult.

    5) Personally I will as far as possible try to avoid to let the oil level get as low as the MIN mark. However, if you get in a situation where the right oil is hard to get then the increased volume between MIN and MAX gives you more flexibility.

With the new precision cooling technology BMW Motorrad has reduced the tolerances between the cylinders and the pistons (according to several public articles) and a much lower engine oil consumption is to be expected (again according to some of these articles). So the issue of topping up oil between services may be a lot less than it used to be with the former 1200GS.

The additional tool kit can be ordered using this BMW spare part number: 71 60 8 523 399

    v-max and 0 to 100 kmh :rofl

It is no drag racer but it corners like a horny male rabbit on too much viagra that are chasing an even faster female rabbit.
