We get lots of questions about which is better - the ktm or the bmw.
Expect OC to resoundingly say the ktm. Doh!

Therefore a bit of almost humour about the eternal GS v 950 debate from a fellow who had owned both for a little while. Looking then buying his bike, now he's got a few miles on the 950 finally oops, guess what happened!

On a more serious note, people ask what are the first modifications to a 950.
Obviously the choices are quite personal but the common answers seem to be:
  • exhausts - lose weight, heat and gain sound!
  • jet said bike to suit pipes and altitude.
  • if USA spec canisterectomy is a must do...
  • tune suspension to suit rider style and weight
  • perhaps crash bars and pannier mounts to help your toy survive the inevitable
  • centre stand if you don't have one.
  • fit ultra heavy duty tubes as field tube repairs are one PITA
  • going to an aftermarket seat seems popular but you will get used to the stock one...

I have not tried it yet, as I've been lucky with the stock rim weights so far.

How to change the front sprocket

fixing that rear flat:

beforehand grinding the bead is one solution to make it easier to bead break
using the side stand to break the bead

I note I've ridden 30 miles with a flat 908rr rear fully laden up to about 40mph - didn't break the bead tho...

Meatpopsicle's great 640 index thread here (in case you are lost)

The HOW has moved to a new server. It is now located at:

KTM Hall of Wisdom

Many of the threads discussing canisterectomy, flapendectomy, SASectomy, motorectomy, carburetion/jetting, individual modifications, suspension, common problems/issues, How-to's, and many more subjects can be found there.

Can we add this one to the High Fender Conversion section in the OP?

It is 990 Non-S specific.

There's good info in this thread about how I finally found a person to rewind the 950 stator:
