Easy way to search ADVrider
Using Google to search ADVrider helps the site by reducing its server load. It also allows for three character searches. Till now the way to do it was to use "site:www.advrider.com (enter search term)" in a Google search. For example, here's an ADVrider Google search for the term "motorcycle".
Cool thing is that the latest Google Toolbar makes site searching really easy, with a new button dedicated to searching only the site that's currently loaded. Just enter a search term and click. Go here to d/l the latest version... http://toolbar.google.com/T4/?promo=mor-tb-en

Yes thanks, this is the best way to search this site, not only does it free up server load, no more hassles with xxx being excluded because it was too short. You can also do it this way drz site:advrider.com, with the search term before the site:advrider.com

Is there any way to do forum specific searches using google?
For example. if I wanted to learn about "FMF" pipes on a KTM 950 Adventure I'd want to limit the search to the "Orange Crush" forum. |

On ADVrider, every forum has an ID, and every thread has an ID. You can add these to your search terms with the allinurl term, and google will restrict its search to URLs with that thread ID or forum ID. Probably easier to provide an example. URL for Orange Crush Forum: http://www.advrider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=34 Note the f=34 : this is the orange crush forum id. URL to a thread (which happens to be in Orange Crush) http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=154019 Note the t=154019 : this is the id of the thread in question. Now, you may type somthing like this into google: Code:
KTM 950 FMF site:advrider.com inurl:"f=34" Similarly, you can search a given thread, by looking at it's id, and adding allinurl:"id=XYZ" to your search terms. For example, the following search: Code:
google site:advrider.com allinurl:"t=163900" The difference between inurl: and allinurl: : inurl: only handles one word/term after the colon. allinurl: can handle several words/terms after the colon. You have to play around with these things to better understand how they work. It is hard to explain in text, so I am not sure I have been clear/correct. Otherwise, you could just add "Orange Crush" (ie - the forum name, in quotation marks), to your search terms - as the forum you are in is always listed at the top of each page. cheers.

aerostich site:www.advrider.com inurl:"f=54" but the resulting links found by google are just to pages listing the thread titles, even though the text seems to be searched. Any idea how to have google return THREADS when it finds a hit??

site:advrider.com "ADVrider > Gear > Flea Market" KTM 950 If you wanted only Parts, then tack a "> Parts" to the end of that quoted bit. Example search: site:advrider.com "ADVrider > Gear > Flea Market > Parts" KTM 950 fuel pump |

There's a search feature at the top of each forum (a "Search This Forum" link) that works for words with four characters or more.
