Too old to skateboard

I'm 31. I'm married. I'm a programmer. I'm 20 lbs. overweight. I ordered a complete board last night on the web. I've never really skated before, but dammit, I'm going to give it a shot. As ridiculous as it sounds, I've been searching around for stuff on the web along the lines of: "too old" "skateboard" "new"... you get the idea. Being confined to a cubicle day in and day out is driving me to find new ways to taste freedom. I'm starting to get this urge to (re)discover all those things I never did when I was younger.

I'm excited to push my boundaries, regain some balance, and quite possibly break my arm (never done that before, either!). 30 is the new 20, right? Wish me luck...

Anybody over 30 on a skateboard is just as sad as somebody under 30 on a golf course.

PS What'd ya get?

ha! I like that. I picked out a black 'Moose' blank (no logo, etc) from an ebay retailer. $25 for the complete set, $21 to ship.

I used to skateboard. then i tried mountainboarding a few years back (when i was in my 30s). check out mongoose site, or google atb (all terrain boards). they are bigger out west apparently, kind of like snowboarding w/o snow, bigger board, wheels. not fun for just riding straight (need a hill).
cool tho.
now i get my thrills on me bike. arrgh.
let me know if you want any more info (others on this site probably have more experience w/ these)

I rode it in Paris on Bastille Day and what a fucking blast that was. Those sidewalks are puuuuurfect for skating, got all sorts of lost trying to get to the Eiffel Tower from Montrouge. It was a great day I rode the shit out of it in the UK as well. I skated Okinawa and the Philippines while in the service - cheaper than cabs and see more sights. Broke my wrist in the PI once after a long night of barhopping in Olongopo:

You can see my current deck there on top of the grey storage unit - it's an Element, Indy trux :

Some of my old decks are on the wall - memories of fonder, younger and more limber days

Landshark,

Don't wear crappy shoes.. cover your ankles and tape em if necessary... older ankles get worked on a board... Voice of Emergency room Experience...

Start slow and don't expect overnight wins..

Have fun, Still have my Boards, just not as hardcore... Wish I could find a nice empty Half Pipe and the courage to drop in again...

Old Guys Can Skate!

About 2 years ago I entered an internet short film contest where they assign a topic and deadline. I shot this in a day:

The old guy in the poster is Chris Chaput. He owns ABEC 11 and designs all the wheels.

It's not a great story, but it's fun and has some classic Old School skating!

WOW... I had a Chapstick board... and Lipbomb wheels!!!! I used to skate at a park in Va. where Chris skated all the time - or at least I remember seeing him there. That was only like 30 years ago... He was really, really good, and also very nice.

I'm about his age.

Nice!

Any feedback come about from that film??

Street/vert skating seems like a great cross-training exercise for moto stuff ...especially trials (skaters seem to take to trials pretty naturally from what I've been hearding). My sport was primarily surfing right up until a year or so after I got my first moto in 2003. Still skate & surf, but not daily like before - there's a lot of ground to cover on the KTM !

Don't remember when these were taken - sometime between '98 - '04. My friends & I would all shoot B&W film & process in my darkroom.

Skimboarding is closely related it seems ...
