Any linux users out there using a Zumo? What tools are you using for mapping and interacting with the GPS?

I have a Garmin eTrex and the Ubuntu version of Linux. I can get the MapSource software to install through WINE o.k. & you can create routes but it won't recognise the GPS do upload. I now use the pre-loaded software memory cards so it has not been an issue. If anyone does have the full solution, I would also be interested.

Right now, run MapSource on the free Windows 7 RC inside a VMware Server virtual machine. I do this on my Mac to run MapSource to interface to my eTrex Vista. I am using a USB-serial dongle though, so that might circumvent any problems you're having with the serial port.

I just hate using emulators and other layers for tasks that should be run natively! Dangit!

Ok, so I have found some tools that look promising. I haven't had a chance to check them out in detail yet, but I will and I'll let you know what I find. If any of you have experience with them already, please chime in.

Check out this thread. I'm running Ubuntu, but have only had my Zumo 660 for a short while, so not a lot of time to experiment yet.

HTH.

Most excellent. Looks like it might not suck that much to be me after all FOSS rules!

If you go the VM route what is the smallest size XP that you can install. My netbook has a small hard drive (4gig).
