Unusual Request-Sand Samples

Hey,

I am an avid rider (fleet of harley's and KTM 950)

I am also a 5th grade teacher. I am working on a science project for my students exploring sands and soils of the world. Thought I might take a chance and see of any fellow riders might consider picking up samples of interesting sands and or soils from travels.

All I need is a small sample about 1/4 cup or 30ml. (Although I can use additional quantities for trade with sand collectors.) I specifically desire sample from historical sites or scenic landmarks.

If you are considering this I would entertain the possibilities of trades from Texas. (I also wrote a little book about a trip I took to Alaska in the 90's that I would trade...)

PM me if there are any willing volunteers...

Thanks

AL

Checking in from Wisconsin. I could send a sample from glacial Lake Wisconsin or the glacial bed of the Wisconsin River. Oh, and how about Lake Superior? That would give me a reason for another road trip... ;)
Edit: Boy, I bet this will add new meaning to "go pound sand"...

One comment, soil samples are capable of carrying viable seeds, bacteria, funghi, foot and mouth disease, etc. Importing soil into the USA is certainly a major issue.

I would imagine clean mineral sand is less of a problem, but anyone sending samples from outside North America should be sure to declare the contents on the customs label and not be surprised if it is confiscated.

I'm from Australia. Biosecurity is very serious, if I could magically remove rabbits or cane toads or Patterson's Curse from Australia tomorrow, I would become a billionaire.

I bake all foreign sands at very hihg temps to reduce the likelyhood of this occuring, PLUS the soils do not circulate outside my lab....but yes this is an issue.

We generally label the contents, "Mineral samples for study."

I am well aware of the effect of exotics....major conservation projects we do with our students include eradication of Chinese tallow, water hyacinth, and monitoring for exotic mussels in Texas waters. I go to great lengths to eliminate the risk of causing an ecological disaster. In the big scope the bruning of fossil fuels to deliver the package is more environementally risky than the chance of exotics being spread. See deepwater spill.

But yes, there is a chance of soils being confiscated. Sand, being minerals is less likely.
