Setting timing: Idoit`s.....Itiods....Idjit... Dummy`s guide

Hi Guys (and gals)

Do we have an idiot`s guide to setting the timing of an airhead somewhere?

A quick search or 2 brought no useable results.

get a manual such as clymers or haynes.... it'll save you a lot of back and forth

Got a clymer and a strobe gun.

Don't know if I am doing it wrong, but on my ST I get OT in the window at idle.

On my R100RS, I get nothing in the window, and Z at 2500 RPM.

This is my first try at timing. Previously left it to the more mechanically minded.

Am I connecting the borrowed strobe wrong?
How far out am I to have OT instead of S in the window?

I've heard rumors that some guns work squirrly when not connected to a seperate battery. Never seen that myself.

I did set out to time an auto the other day and at first I could not find the timing mark at all. Turned out that I had accidently moved the advance setting on the gun Soon as I dialed it back to zero it started working.

It would help to know the year and model? If post '81 with the electronic bean can, a simple timing light is all you need.

Pre-'81 you set points and check a condenser as well. Here you also worry about a bent end of the drive shaft and weak springs with the advance...hence the double imaging mentioned before.

Also, a worn out chain will throw you off a bit too.

All depends on how many miles and what kind of miles are on the engine.

At idle, you should have the "S" in the middle of the window unless you have a dual plugged set up. The the "S" needs to be at the bottom of the hole. For a normal setup, having the timing too far off and you could end up with a nice hole in the top of your pistons.

The bike will run a lot better too...and you already have the valves set properly before warming the engine up to set the timing

Ebay has a long list of small timing lights with internal batteries that are perfect for bikes.

Electronic ignition on both the ST and RS.

Is it necesarry to have the bike warmed up to set the timing?

On the ST......,(bear in mind that this is my first ever setting of timing on my own), I dId not notice the S directly under the OT.....
Anyway, did notice that eventually, and whereas previously the OT mark was centered in the window, now it is the S mark..., the Z mark appears at 3500 RPM
Have not had an opportunity to test my tinkering yet.

On my RS, nothing registered in the window, it was that far off. The Z mark appeared at 2500 RPM.
Got that sorted now. With the S centered in the window, and the Z appearing at 3500 RPM.
Also, have not had an opportunity to test, looking forward to that.
