Dakar stage maps - the top secret stuff !
After hours of investigations, spying, and using my full bag of connections and secret tricks, I have mapped out the complete Stage 1 Special. I have it in full Google Earth form, which could be pretty handy for competitors to study for an hour or two, zoomed in to see every turn and every bush.
I already started on Stage 2, and guess what, . . . I'll leave it at that! ![]() Stage 1: The stage starts in flat farmlands in an area called Rodeo Viejo. This is a lot of VERY fast dirt roads with a couple of wash crossings. If it rains, these washes could present some interesting challenges. Without rain I suspect they will be dry. Later the route curves up into some rugged mountains, reaching around 3800ft (1200m). These mountain roads are very twisty and not so wide, with lots of opportunities for going off the edge. The motos take a bit of a shortcut detour mid-way, but then rejoin the car route. The detour is not shown on this map but it's in some rugged mountain terrain. The stage then goes back down to farm lands, back into the mountains, back down again, finally finishing near San Agustin. Enjoy! |

My Spanish isn't very good, but it's clear that about half way through they ride through a section where tigers will try to kill them (Tigre Muerto). Seems like guys on bikes will be unfairly disadvantaged. But then this the the Dakar, not some pansy-arse baja ride!

After a bit more work on Stage 1, I was able to map out the two places where the bike route departs from the car/truck route. One is a shortcut midway through. The other is at the end of the stage. It looks like ASO is trying to make the bike route a bit shorter and keep them away from the cars at the end so there isn't much car vs bike passing.
I also mapped the first 70% of Stage 2, including the separate car and bike sections of the route. Stage 2 is pretty much ALL mountains, so they won't be hitting 100mph much if any! If I had a roadbook or two to work from, this would have been a bit easier! Here's a view of the course through the farmlands at the beginning of Stage 1. VERY fast stuff! ![]() And later in Stage 1: ![]() And a view of the moto only section of Stage 2. This is pretty typical of the whole stage. Damn that road looks like FUN !!!
