CAMPING freeze dried FOOD rating thread.

hey you FF's,
i started the SMALL bike camping thread http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=641622 for those who camp minimally off a "smaller" bike (not a GS1200 or 990ADV) and food has come up on what to eat, how to pack it, AND if it tastes good.

i threw out there that we should start a new thread to RATE freeze dried food
ie; Mountain House, Backpackers Pantry, Raging River, Mary Janes Farm, Natural High and also packaged food from any other store like packaged tuna, salmon, jerky, rice, beans, etc. and also spices or spice "racks".
http://www.rei.com/category/4500042

this thread will make it easier for us ADV riders to make better and easier choices when we are shopping for a camping trip to NOT buy the wrong inedible foods.

post up what you like/ dislike. why you like or dislike it. and other info like how easy it was to make (add hot water and wait 5 minutes then eat or separate ingredients and cook separately), and the price range.

this will be an ever evolving thread just like the SMALL bike camping thread so i look forward to all the info that everyone will post on here

we could do a rating from 1 - 10 (1 being inedible and 10 being gourmet-almost-from-a-restaurant-good)

Good thread.

Mountain House Beef Stew: Good...just needs salt. ( I add salt to everything though)
Mountain House Scrambled Eggs with Bacon: Nasty....tasted like "egg sponge".

Backpacker's Pantry "Biscuits and Gravy" was excellent!!!
i would give it an 8.

there are two separate parts inside the package.

you need to mix the biscuit mix with water in a separate bowl and after cooking the gravy in your pot, you put the biscuit mixture on top of the cooking gravy in the pot and COVER the pot and cook for a few minutes until the biscuits cook(bake) thoroughly.

you will need a pot with a lid, a separate bowl to mix the biscuit mix, utensils.

i added salt and black pepper to the gravy (i like things salty and peppery).

this is a dish i would eat at home, no joke ! ! !

+1 and
+1

add MH Beef Stroganoff and also I like nearly all the rice dishes by MH.

I have eaten a truck load of FD and find that rice benefits from a little more water and 50% more soak.

I have not tried all brands and flavors, but have never liked Spaghetti With Meat Sauce of any manufacturer.

Tried the Ice Cream too, which is a bit of a joke. More like a meringue and still fun to take as a treat. It is so light it might make you pack lighter.

Mountain House stuff is like crack for me after a day's riding. My personal favorites are the spaghetti with meat sauce and lasagna. I- as one would expect from a goon- eat one or 2 of the 2 person servings for a meal and the beast is calmed.

I like the other MH ones mentioned, but the above are my favs...

MH Spaghetti is the next one I have at home to try.

Wife tried the MH ice cream..and tried a bit too. Kinda crappy...but would work as desert if I had nothing else.

A favourite of mine - the only drawback is the bright red poo the next day

Really?....that was the worst part of that meal for me. I accept that freeze dried food will taste differently from non freeze dried..I just don't want it to taste like saw dust.

Wow..maybe I have to try them again. I hate pepper, but love salt..but even salt was not helping. LOL

Its OK though..I am just as well with frying and egg and some bacon..and having that in a wrap for breakfast. My pics of that are somewhere a couple pages back.

Storganoff
Was pretty good, cooked even, nice flavor nothing exciting but filling.

Lasagna
Was pretty good, but needed some pepper. Was a bit tame in taste but good. One thing though if you use a fork with the foods with cheese, it is a PITA to clean it off after!

Chicken and Rice
Taste was good, would make a good side dish, not too much chicken in it. Pepper again would have helped and some salt too.
Cooking was even and fast, but did need to beat up the bag to break it up before adding water.

Beef Stew
Again pretty tasty but needed pepper, I am guessing they plain it down so it appeals to more folks. Sauce was good and veggies were fresh tasting.
Anyway the pain with this one was the cooking. Fresh boiling water in the bag and 10min later it was still not cooked all the way. You need to smack the bag to break it up a bit so it hydrates evenly. I added more boiling water and it still was not cooked all the way. This one is not a simple water/wait/eat one like the rice and chicken or lasagna above.

Chilli Mac and Beef
This one is a winner! Per previous suggestions I have taken to adding more water/time for anything with beef or chicken so it cooks evenly. I looked at the small print and it said spicy sauce, crap I thought! But it was not spicy at all, might even leave the pepper out on this one . Would be great with some extra cheese and a side of bread or roll.
Oh and for the spicy meter, I think chilli's hot wings are a 9 (1-10[hottest]) scale . This meal was a 1. Nice flavor and the noodles and beans tasted fresh!

Spaghetti with meat sauce
well another good one. The 120z of water was enough to cook it all, left if for 13minutes and it was fully cooked. Tasted very much like canned spaghetti, perhaps a bit better. Added pepper and a touch of salt which improved things greatly. Maybe even some dried herbs to give a bit more punch. Noodles are cut and small so easy to eat with a spoon. Had to make sure to mix this one as well as other more powdery ones to insure that they hydrated properly.

Noodles and Chicken
Another great one, let it sit in the bag a little bit extra to fully cook and used a bit more water than they state. Nice noodles and chicken with peppers and some other spices. Not Bland at all. Would make a nice side dish to something else also.

also check this, can be great as dumplings in some of these or cooked as a filler/bread for these meals.

Beef Stroganof, Chili Mac, Beef Stew are all reasonbly good IMO. A nice glass of Cabernet or Merlot helps.

Add Fritos to the Chili Mac.

Not freeze dried but trader joes red or green curry with tuna is my new favorite bike camping meal. Drop the foil pouch in the jet boil for a few minutes with my minute rice pouch and by the time I fold my origami bowl I have an awesome dinner.
