My Side Stand Relocater.

I got this evening the two side stand relocaters made by a friend Mike who is a tool maker at an engineering firm, as you can imagine the quality is excel lance. The plates are made from 6mm steel and are 439g. We looked at different scenarios from longer bolts into the case so effectively it becomes a brace and isolating the case mount points completely. Welding studs, threaded studs and countersunk.

At the moment this is for the SE, if enough interest I will make one for the Adventurer to accommodate the adventures skid plate, a UK guinea pig will be needed, please PM me if youíre interested, I live in Dorset. Guys Iím not trying to compete with other makers out there, this is my creation as an engineered solution for me. But if there is interest enough, say 20 or so I can have a batch made up, if not, Iím happy either way. I estimate, talking to Mike, £40 quid per kit, making it worthwhile for him, but hopefully it will be less. All I need to do now is powder coat or paint.

This is a test piece just to find the best stud, countersunk solution.

The best solution IMO kit. I.e countersunk. The shark fin sits in the void in the frame under the foot peg to give added rigidity

If I'm correct, the mounting points are identical to the BDCW bracket.

Good: the choice of material.

Still the lack of second moment of area in the dimension this type of brackets are stressed occupies me.

Almost, it uses the shape of the frame, i.e. to help prevent movement and rotation in the event of a crash. And it has three mounting holes that that bolt into the frame, BD has two.

Thanks for the offers to be Adventure guinea pig, the design as it is will fit the Adventure as is, as the mounting points are identical to the SE, i.e. frame, engine layout are the same. All I will need to do is fit a plate to an adventure, mark and measure the material that will need to remove to accommodate the Adventure skid plate, which will be minimal and won’t affect the strength but will use two mounting points instead of three, but the design was intended to prevent rotation in the event of a hard hit and damaging the generator case cover. This will also be suitable for an SE with a Tourtech skid plate.

If enough interest I will go ahead and have a batch made up, SE and Adv, but I’m not doing this as a business prospect, just offering to help out fellow inmates, I’ve paid for mine. It was heat painted today so hopefully will install tomorrow and I’ll take some more picks.

Just to keep everyone in the loop, the SE plate is being machined up now. Then off to the miller to be countersunk and painted, so a total of three companies just to make this side stand relocater. There was a minimum order so that will give only a few plates to start with, hopefully should start producing the Adv plates next week.

I was putting the finishing touches to the Adv relocater today along with inmate ACP, nice guy. I should have the first batch of SE plates completed this week, there was a misunderstanding with the engineering company, I asked for a test piece first out of 1mm steel to match, I received a 6mm plate 7 days later, so I am waiting for the first order and then to be milled.

I’m very happy with the Adv design; it’s been designed to accommodate the standard Adv and G-IT sump guard, I see no reason why it wouldn’t match with others sump guards. Many thanks to ACP for his time, a top bloke and for the tea, coffee and use of his Adv S making this all possible, as I said before, I only originally intended to make some for the SE, but due to the interest and PM’s I’ve received....

Hopefully, as things are progressing at a faster pace now, I will be able to get a plate to you this week or next. I’m keen to get as much feedback as possible.

It will be 6mm steel, not 8mm, I’ve steered away from stainless or high tensile, hopefully this will give a point of give with a big off, preventing, limiting damage elsewhere.

I bent my SE’s standard side stand pivot plate like a banana in a crash; luckily the case was fine, if it had been made of tensile steel, I’m not sure I would have been as lucky. The main bolt going through the case, I’m still undecided whether to use an 8.8 grade bolt or 10.9. 8.8 would have a better chance of failure in a crash, what do you think?
