Awesome Africa -

A selection of my favorite (not best) pictures from my part of the word, the Southern tip of Africa, but includes rides to other surrounding countries. Some are from older rides, some from this year and others will be posted as they are taken.

Please feel free to also post your own.

Heading towards Kestel, Eastern FreeState

Overlooking Golden Gate Park from Drakensberg mountains on Lesotho border.

On the same road you'll find JenLee's Bistro on the turn-off to the Caledonspoort border post.

Their lawn ornaments...

Butha Buthe, Lesotho. Stopped for food and were crowded by kids..

Somewhere in Lesotho...kid were sitting on these 2 chassis beams while guarding their cattle.
Here, in the more rural areas, some kids do not go to school at all. They would be the family's Shepard from very young, and would be sent out to live with and tend the cattle. They would be away from home for weeks when grazing the cattle in the mountains.

From the road to Monontsha border post between South Africa and Lesotho.
A REAL beat up dirt road climbing through a real steep grade (you go to about 6000ft), and then down again into Lesotho. Where you find there is no border post on their side .
When you pass through, South Africa will stamp you out and back again no problem. But boy, try and get out of Lesotho from one of Lesotho's other border posts, and get ready to be screamed at

Road between Harrismith and QwaQwa in the FreeState.

Exploring some back roads, I stopped for something cold at a shebeen (unlicensed watering hole). In most instances when stopping you will get a hearty welcome and instant friendship. These guys were getting to the bottom of their drum of Jwala( home made beer from sorghum), and although they probably enjoyed the conversation, half of it were not making much sense. The guy in the white shirt found it real hard to stand and beer were all over as he was gesturing while trying to talk...he was ready to fall over and pass out.
In rural Africa it is not out of the ordinary for guys to sit around all day drinking beer, while the woman are out in the fields, tending the crops.

I decided to stick to Coke. The chief of the village is the guy sitting next to me in blue.

Kids around here still play like we used to, making their own toys, like these guys.

Raid the fence for wire, score a few old bean cans, "borrow" your dads pliers and you're in business.

Anthills, as we call them...

...or more correctly, termite mounds. Made from mostly termite saliva, plant matter and soil, these guys (the mounds, that is) are hard enough for a grown man to jump on with no ill effect. Around here they don't grow that high, but further north you find some seriously big ones.

Interesting fact #213: In some African countries they eat this as a supplement as it is rich in minerals ...
... not in my house though...

Since no one else is chiming in

I didn't have a bike when I was in Africa, but I certainly found places worth riding, some of them already mentioned:

Sani Pass, Eastern Lesotho / Drakensberg Mountains. Note the hairpin turns.

From the top of Thabana Ntlenyana, tallest mountain south of Kilimanjaro in Africa. No iron pony, but my flesh and blood pony seemed to have carb problems. It kept surging, nearly throwing me over the pommel each time the surge stopped. IIRC, a reasonably skilled single track rider could get up here:

Somewhere in central Lesotho:

10 hours on the back of this, on these roads, will make you wish for a DS bike in northern Mozambique. This was shortly after one passenger was thrown off and broke his ankle, due to the blowout on a slick mud road:

The entire south coast of South Africa is worth seeing, and a beautiful ride. Hermanus, whale watching and great white shark diving capital of the country:

Of course, there are some places in Africa where you're better off having a bike with 4 wheels. SE of Swakopmund, Namibia:

And if you can get your bike through the Kaokoveld, there are some beautiful remote areas to see. That is, if the Namibian government hasn't turned it into a hydroelectric dam by the time you get there. Epupa Falls, Namibia, with southern Angola in the background:

I really want to get back to Namibia with a middle weight DS...
