Does Size Matter? CO / UT Part 2 (we're still confused)

(Warning!!! This ride report will contain input and perspective from all of us. There will be lies, exaggerations, confusion and lots of pictures.)

The cast has somewhat changed, the bikes have changed, but the destinations stayed the same.

Supahflid and I decided, once again, to escape the sweltering heat of Mississippi and head for the milder September temperature of southwest Colorado and southeast Utah. For those interested, last year’s ride report can be found here: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=616833

This year’s participants once again include:

DavidQ – Husky te610 (last year on a DRZ400)
Supahflid – KTM 990 Dakar (last year on a KLR 650)
Eatalotapeaches – 1200 GSA (last year on a DRZ 400)

Also joining us are:

Backwoodsklr – KLR 650
Evilbollweevil – KLR 650
Weave – Husky te610
Paddle 007 – DR650

Weave and Paddle are from Louisiana. We met them in Ouray last year. They are great guys and a lot of fun to be around. They would be meeting up with us Saturday.

Thursday, September 1st

We left Brandon, MS around 4pm bound for Ouray, CO. It was a pretty uneventful next 24 hours, except a flat trailer tire at 3:30am in north Texas.

Friday, September 2nd

Mid afternoon we had finally made our way to southwest CO.

We arrived in Ouray about 4pm and decided to make a quick trip up to Yankee Boy Basin.

Supah (left), BW (right)

Within the first two miles, Officer Barker decided to let me know I was going a little too fast.

After I agreed to control my “enthusiasm” he let me continue with a warning.

About half way down, and way past dinner time, Supah decided to get a flat. Evil jumped in and we were soon on our way.

Almost back to Ouray.

Saturday, September 3rd

Weave and Paddle wouldn’t be here until later in the afternoon so we decided to take it easy and head for the Alpine Loop.

We left Ouray and headed for Engineer Pass.

This little guy was wondering what all the commotion was about.

from left to right: Peaches, supah, evil, BW, DavidQ, and James. We met James in Ouray. He was by himself for the day so we invited him to join us.

Definitely learned my lesson. I won't be making fun of EBW anymore. His hoodoovoodoo is strong.

Day 2: California, Engineer, Cinnamon and Ophir Passes

Day 2

This was a fun day with lots of riding. There may or may not have been a dropped bike or two, but generally these are easy passes to ride. There were lots of four wheeled vehicles, both on and off road types and for the most part, everyone got along fine.

Random pics from the passes:

DQ and James

EBW and the bikes

EBW and a waterfall

Backwoods

A thing of beauty

Evilbollweevil

Peaches, EBW and BW; not sure what Peaches is laughing about; EBW prolly said something about mosquitoes and turkeys.

The next three pictures are of James who we met at our hotel. Come to find out, he used to race enduro and apparently even at 61, he hasn't lost any skills! Good job James!

EBW, Paddle and Weave

Weave

Weave and DQ

Backwoods

Weave

Peaches

DQ

EBW

DQ doing his best to be GQ; not the only hat he wore on this trip!

Heading toward Lake City for lunch, I met this guy.

He and his two friends have been hiking and hunting for four days. All of them were carrying 60 pound backpacks.

Capitol City

Lunch at the Packer Saloon in Lake City

Then on towards Cinnamon Pass

In Animas Forks for a short break, then on to CA pass and Corkscrew

oops, the KLR didn't like this hill.

We got back to Ouray in time to meet Weave and Paddle for supper.

The real fun stuff starts tomorrow. SINGLE TRACK

The KLR's RIDER didn't like it either, but that is what happens when you blindly follow someone when you don't know they are scouting a possible trail and not leading the "way out"....

Before we hit the good road going to the single track we had to ride the boring road around the San Miquel River

The MS boys are freaking nuts, at some point everyday I would wonder if we were going to make it out for cocktails or be pushing the little help button on the spot.

Okay, so since this was a real "first" for me to attempt a trip like this, I tried to prepare. EvilBollWeevil and I built a chock system for my truck, picked up altitude sickness medicine and more... I still wasn't prepared for the level of awesome!!!

By the way, it is a long and boring drive from Jackson, MS to Ouray, Co... We left my house around 4:30pm and tried to make good time...

Crossing the MS:

Here I am, on the road again...

The only thing we can find to entertain ourselves is to play with the camera... EBW isn't feeling 100%, so I am driving... the whole way...

You know you are in LA when...

Passed a little wildfire...

Got to watch these sneaky guys...

Are we there yet?!?
