Mesquite Area Ride

Last weekend Greg (dragonrcr) and I drove down to Whitney Pockets, an area about 30 miles south of Mesquite, Nevada.

(I found this picture of Whitney Pockets online)

From I-15 the area around Mesquite doesn't seem that alluring (no offense Mesquit-ians, Mesquitos, Mesq . . . residents of Mesquite).

But my brother and I rode there one rainy day a couple of years ago after running across some gps tracks online, so we knew there was some fantastic riding in that area.

We thought a few more guys would join us, but nobody else was able to take the time to go. It was dark on Thursday before we left Logan. We arrived in Mesquite sometime that night and found a church parking lot to park in and sleep for a few hours.

When we woke up we went to Walmart, then out to Whitney Pockets to find a place to camp.

We stopped and camped short of the main Whitney Pockets area. This must be the busy season there, but there was only a handful of other campers.

Gold Butte

We got a late start Friday, so we only did (the best) part of the Gold Butte Loop. Here's a video from my flip video camera and Greg's GoPro.

When we got back we drove into Mesquite for a casino buffet. We ended up at the Casa Blanca, but neither of us were very impressed with the food. We decided to haul enough food back with us that we wouldn't have to come back into town. While we drove we listened to the book Ender's Game, which made the drive enjoyable.

Most of what we have is video rather than pictures, so it might be another week before I have the time to put together video of the next two days.

Nice video. Whitney Pockets is a great area. Very accessible for inmates from Las Vegas. I want to do a bit more exploring of routes from Whitney Pockets back towards Grand Canyon overlook points -- Twin Points, Whitmore Canyon, Toroweap. Lots and lots of territory.

Not too many restaurants in Mesquite are known for "high quaility" food. Tends to be quantity over quality.

Thanks for sharing.

My laptop broke over spring break, but after much effort I was able to get a lot of the content off the hard drive, so with my new laptop I put together the next video segment.

We spent the next day in the Paiute Wilderness, the very northwest corner of Arizona.

I got us off track early on. Once we found a trail again we rode up toward Mt. Bangs.

I had terrible allergies last night and couldn't sleep, so I got the next video clip done.

After riding a few miles in mud we took a break. Greg accidentally set his GoPro camera to take a picture every few seconds. We thought a couple of them should be album covers.

Dinner:

A family with young kids camped next to us the 2nd night. After dark the dad walked into our camp and offered us some bbq'ed corn (with garlic & other spices). I think the guy was in the air force based out of Vegas.

We accepted the corn, though after the guy left Greg insisted he wasn't going to eat anymore food. Then he smelled it and changed his mind.

A while after that his wife came over saying that she was used to cooking for scouts and had made too much. She offered us dessert: poppy seed lemon cake with blueberry topping, made in a dutch oven. So, so good!

I gratefully accepted, again Greg insisted he didn't want any, but soon became weak and again chose gluttony.

On the last day of riding we only rode for a few hours, then packed up and drove home. We headed east out into the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument area. It was mostly fast dirt roads.

Here is a few minutes of video from that day:

We listened to Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow as we drove back to Northern Utah. We both barely had enough money to make it home, but we made it. Good times.
