Metzeler ME 880 Marathon mileage question
I just put a brand new set on my Shadow. For anybody that has tried these out, what kind of mileage did you get out of them?

I have ~ 4,000 on my set and can hardly see any wear at all. They are on a Honda VT1300. The bridgestones that came on the bike were showing wear and cupping on the front at this same time. They ended up lasting about 10,000. I like the Metzelers much better. Smoother riding and better handling.

I used them on a Trophy 1200 and a R1150RT. 12,000 or so. Made a little noise in the curves toward the end, but handled great wet or dry.

10K with barhopping under hard accerleration on my Fat Boy. They dont track road grooves like the Dunlops that come stock on Harleys and wear much better too. They start feeling greasy or slippery on turns when they get close to being worn out though.

On my 2001 R1200C I've been using ME880 tires for 12 riding seasons. I have 73,000 plus miles and have averaged 10,000 miles on the rear tire and 12,000 miles for the front tire. It's been a terrific tire for me over the years.

12,000 to 15,000 on my GL1500 Goldwing
My last replacement, at about 12,000, the front was getting down there but maybe had a a thousand or two miles left on it. There rear was much better it might have had 3 or 4 K, but I was going on a long trip so I replaced both tires. Plus the shop had a special $20 tire removal, mount and balance for any bike!! They were not happy to see a Goldwing, which generally takes a couple of hours and usually runs $100 plus just for the rear.... it was a good deal

The ones I put on my '03 Concours lasted about 20,000 miles. Maybe even a bit more. I replaced with the same.

Grip wise, I've never has a problem, wet or dry EXCEPT; with the whizzy BMW brakes I can get the tires to "impending skid" on dry pavement by dropping anchor and the ME880 does not stop as well as a stickier sport-touring tire like the PR2/3, the Dunlop Roadsmart, or Z6. It is a noticeable and significant difference.

12,000 miles and they show wear of course but don't look close to being worn out. Stock tires were gone at 10,000.

I have 'em on a Yamaha XS1100 Special with bags and fairing. 10 K + on the rear, still decent, and 12 K + on the front, also still looking decent. Probably replace them next spring. Replaced Dunlop E III. Outlasting the Dunlop, seem stickier too.

Me 880
A good riding buddy has become a believer. He mounted a pair on his '07 BMW 1200 C. because that was all the dealer had in stock. Amazingly, at 14,000 miles, the front still looked pretty good & the rear was still legal, but worn. Since then, he's mounted nothing else. I know his riding style, & he's very gentle on starts & stops & doesn't press real hard in the corners, but even so, the milages he gets are extraordinary. Actually, I wonder about getting such high milage on any tires. I think that, to some extent, tires ought to be sacrificing themselves to maintain grip. I'm not talking about the guys who burn through a set of Diablo Corsas in one track day, but if a tire gives such extraordinary milage, I suspect that it's too hard , & not optimized for grip. It's all a compromise, I like to find tires that give me 9 - 10,000 mi., at about 5,000 mi. per year, that's a new set every third year. Here in New England, Jan & Feb are pretty much a washout, weather wise, so I can replace the set with little disruption to the riding.

I used to get 14-15 k on the rears on my PC800, and 9-10k on the Wee-Strom. The one that I ran on the front of the Wee had 31k (miles!) on it when I took it off. It still had some tread left on it, but it was starting to cup a bit.
