Rear tires on the front??.

I'm not sure where to post this but I need a 120/90-17 front adventure/dual sport tire and all I can find ( except for 705's and TKC's) are rear tires.I have heard that if you mount them backwards they work ok for the front??.Anybody done this ??

i know of some ppl who run that way,,,, non directional tire is the better option.

Do-able, but why? For what bike?

If it's a road bike with a 17 that's had a 120/70 road tire on it, the 120/90 has very much taller sidewall and flatter tread. They are not radial design and are tube type, and you lose about 60% of your contact patch.

Personally I think it's a bad idea for a road bike. After you hit the guard rail or go off an embankment you'll wished you would have stuck with the right tire.

I just posted on the 705 thread on the fullbores.


EDIT: Oh, and rim width - the 120/90 tire is for a narrower rim than a roadbike with a 120/70. Lose even more of edge tread. Look for riding past the chicken-strips.

It's a GS500 thats going to Alaska and will see alot of dirt roads.A 120 will fit,I have seen one but it was more of a offroad tire than I want.I might go with the FullBore,if it's like the 705 it's sold as a front ir rear.

The fullbore looks identical, has slightly larger spaces between the treadblocks. The 150/70 is V rated, the smaller tires and fronts are 'S'. Which is fine for the front of your bike.

Most any tire will run on the front, but some tend to be a less rounded profile (rear tires) which can further exacerbate the reduced contact patch issue. Or you ride them completely to the edge.

I think the fullbores would be great for dirt roads. I like them fine on the tiger. Knobbies are better though, maybe a Heidenau or Mefo would work as well - lots of sizes.

EDIT: yeah, just looked up tire sizes for GS500. Odd, came with a 110/70-17. I would run the 120/90 fullbore on it. Bet it would work pretty good. You may have to raise the front fender. Highly likely it won't fit under a low fender. Just don't try to scrape the pegs on the twisties.

I ran an 18" rear on the front of my TDM. As long as you pick one with a rounded profile, it will handle fine. I mounted it as I would on the rear.


If you settle for All Terrain instead of knobbies, you can find one that fits.

Pirelll MT 90 A/T and Kenda make ones. If you want a taller aspect ratio, look at tires with inch measurements. They are as tall as wide. A Shinko 4.60 is an example. Typically you will have to run a tube in those.

If you have a radial on the rear, you can run a bias tire on the front, but not the opposite.

You probably know this, but metric tires such as 110/90/17 are 110 mm in width, the second number is a percentage of the first or 99mm in this case. Inch tires are all 100%. A 4.60 would be 116.8/116.8mm. I chose the inch tire. I had modded the rear shock mount to gain ground clearance. The taller front did the same for the front of the bike.

I run 120/60/17 sport tire on my GS500 and a 120/70 or bigger will rub the fender in a dual sport or offroad tire.I solved this by using a Bandit 400/600 front fender.It's still close.I now run a Katana 750 front end which has the same clearance issues.

The stock tire is a 110,there just isn't any 80/20 tires in that size.

I will run a matching rear tire to the front.I might also mount a high fender
(supermoto style ) but I will keep the fork brace and just raise it up.It's
My wifes bike and she is NOT a knee dragger !!.I looked into the MT90 and Kenda 761? And I think they are both tube type.

it works just fine , a 120 17 shinko 705 mounted backwards on the front . and mounted tubeless to boot ...........the sky didn't fall , and life was good

Me too, Kenda K761, has a good profile, sticks better on the street than a Pirelli MT60, my Kenda is not mounted backwards, mounted it per the rotation arrow

Sure it will. The traction for the front is for braking, for the rear is accellerating. They are opposite functions.
A tire will throw water either way as long as there are sipes.

Still, a lot of people doing this like to run in the direction indicated. I think it has something to do with their comfort zone. They're already breaking the laws of nature just by running a rear in front, then god help them if they ran it backwards.

So why most tires have almost the same treads design for the front and the rear?

By far the main function of the tire tread is to evacuate water.
