float needles are almost new and flow great. Battery is tight. Plugs look good. I checked all that almost immediately.

check/ clean 'em. Idles and mains, both sides. Some carb circuit is getting loaded/starved. Double check the float height while at it. Both sides

That doesn't sound like fuel to me at all. More like Hall sensor (bean can) issues. Fuel problems aren't intermittent - unless it's something like water in the gas that eventually runs through the system.

Make sure the float isn't hanging up first. I've seen the float needle dig a divot in the brass tang on the float and cause problems. Can't remember if it hung up high or low, though.

For such simple systems, trouble shooting can be a real bitch sometimes. Even with the simpler points systems, it can get complicated. I've heard it said that 90% of carburation problems are electrical. Don't know if that's true or not, but it sure can be tough figuring out which it is sometimes.

started for a sec then died, then backfired at lunch.

Check plugs, coil and can next.

Easy enough to check plugs, I do it all the time... pull them, put the ht wire on them, lay them on the block sorta wedged in firmly, and crank over: look for spark, both sides. This is a gross test, but if the hallsensor has gone south, there will not be sparklers....

You may have a bad coil, bad plug, or both. Try a new set of plugs if ya got em.....
