that is exactly the problem, the xr600 pilot jet was too big for the thread, the honda dealer looked at me

so i bought in the current one and they measured it up and told me to wait 2 weeks for the new one because the only ones they had ready were the same #65! lame!

Can you not buy jets based on Keihin's part number instead of Honda's? It's not uncommon for dealers here to tell you that only one or two jets sizes are available if you ask for Honda numbers, but they have whatever you want if you go by Keihin's.

i wish that were true, ive seen that page before but if you look closely there are no PH model carbs listed. i guess they must have disconinued the PH model. they have the PD for the xr series bikes listed, but like i said, i know that the pilot jet from them wont fit.

as far as i can tell, the PH series carbs were used on:

1984 xr500r
all xl600r
and 1985-87 xr600r

all the other post 1980 honda 500cc+ thumpers were PD model carbs. im guessing that the PD is single and PH is the dual carb models.

The idea is to match your pilot to the dimensions on that list, not just what series Keihins says the jets are for. My XR has a PD and only the main jet is listed(99101-357), but I know my carb uses an N424-21 pilot, which is also on the list. I don't have an XL600 carb in front of me, though.

thanks for your input, and i dont wish to make it seem like i am arguing with you, but:

the only dimensions they list there are the length, which, at least for the pilot jets between the XL(PH) and XR(PD) carbs, is the same length.

initially the dealer gave me the XR jet after looking at the very same chart in thier book, and thinking that seeing as it had the same dimensions it would fit. it didnt, so i took the one that is in the bike in and they measured it up and said that the only other one with the same dimensions would be here in 2 weeks from the japanese market. also looking at the keihin distributor list they dont seem to have an australian distributor.

trust me man if there was an easier way i would do it! it seems my main man gorilla2891 will hook me up though, so its all good.

i am really surprised i have never had this much trouble with getting parts for the xl600, even for really abstract things, you would think that a pilot jet would be relatively simple. there arent even any on ebay!

speaking of the tensioner...

but I think mine is done too. I just put my top end back together and boy oh boy is there a lot of noise coming from the engine. It sounds as if everything else is fine. I went through the service manual and re-read top end procedure. Evidently I was to use a new tensioner spring as part of the top end rebuilt. It also stated that if you cannot turn the tensioner counter clockwise with the shaft, then the tensioner itself is still good. Anyone that has had experience with this care to share their thoughts?

#68 honda #99102-mg3-0680

99103 -420 is keihin series slow jet. check out keihin-us.com/list/htm

if you need #55 try # 99103-mg3-0550 honda

# 99103-42055 keihin

You did reinstall the pin/bolt for the tensioner didn't you?

And the cam sprocket bolts are tight.

Oh sh!t. I dont remember if I tightened the cam sprocket bolts. F@ck. I will be pulling the engine right now to check!!!

yes, the tensioner will only turn in one direction and block in the other direction. the idea is that it ratchets tight with the help of the spring. typically, the spring is usually OK, but if the cam chain has been lose for a while and the tensioner was slipping, it's also time to replace it. also, depending on which method you use to mount it, it may have gotten overextended. it's the cheapest part of the job, so you might as well replace it. when you put it all together the chain should be snug. I noticed you had another post, it could be the camsprocket bolt.

Good call mcma111!!! The sprocket bolts were just hanging out, loose as a goose. Thank goodness I didnt keep running the engine!!!

Back in goes the engine. BTW, tensioner looks good and appears to be doing its job.

wow, you were lucky. I did the same thing on another bike. it didn't rattle, so I rode it around the block (3-4miles) for a test ride and one of the bolt came lose and got wedged between the cam chain and the idler gear. $800 and a 2 mile push later...

From what I could find, those jets are the Keihin N424-74CXXX series with the XXX being the size. For some reason that series is only listed in sizes 35-52...





You're right, though, they're not the easiest to find...
