On the rear of the engine on the left side is a screw in cover for the main stator bolt. remove it, reach in there with a 12mm offset wrench and rotate the engine clock-wise through at least 3 full revolutions. Don't turn it anti clock wise as that will remove the torque on the stator bolt and the bolt will back out eventually and break out that screw in cap.

Of course you can use the rear wheel in 5th gear also, do it with the plugs out, makes it all easier.

+1 with the plugs out--so much easier. I learned the hard way when rotating the engine on the Ninja with the plugs in.

Turned over

Hey, thanks for the tips!
I turned over the engine via the rear wheel - I listened with the plugs out for the sound of the pistons moving and compressions. I cycled four compressions (4 "pfft" sounds) twice through (two revolutions of the engine). Then I did the cycle three more times (three engine revolutions), and things went through without any clanging or major hurdles. It was difficult to turn, but not impossible, and I think it was all normal. I would have had major issues turning it if there was valve interference, right?

Tonight it fired quickly to life, after a coolant refill, and trying to start it twice without the wires on the plugs.

The Aux lights work now (with dedicated switch). Thanks for the tip about the ABS glue. I've sealed up the fairing, and with the exception of the major hole left from the lighter and switch it's much nicer. The hole was too large, and Home Depot doesn't sell ABS pipe in less than 100' lots. I don't need that much pipe. Plus I don't have a heat gun.

The soon-to-be owners have met the bike and are in love. Tomorrow I'll remount the front mc reservoir (which seemed to be leaking, but the o-ring was intact) and ride it to the custom shop, where they'll weld an aft-top mount to the frame under the seat and over the tank. The previous mount broke off while I was trying to clean it up. If it broke during cleaning, I'd rather not be riding with it that way. Anyway, it was a cheap metal strap and I'd rather have the more sturdy solid mount. Pictures to come...
