There is a great little trail from the cabin that comes out in Oriental Wash.

Down to the main road.

Taking my time today.

Into the park.

Heading up the road to Last Chance Spring.

There was a cabin here that burned in 1990 I think.

I hiked up to the mine.

I found the original road. If a mine starts to pay they have the extra cash to put in a better road.

There was a nice grassy area fenced off where they kept the livestock.

I hiked overland towards the spring.

I figured these were bobcat tracks...

I spotted the spring and while crossing another draw I found the mountain lion tracks...those were cub tracks, not bobcat. Please, don't eat me...I'll go now.

I had to go past the springs to get to the bike.

Gulp...tracks where there weren't any just ten minutes ago, they had circled back around me.

Let's get outta here!!

Thumb What an inspiration.

I am thoughly enjoying this adventure of yours Larry. After years of not being able to ride offroad motorcycles because of a long illness I bought a used adventure bike this fall and am trying to get back into riding. For now I'm living through your adventure. Thank you for taking the time to share this with all of us.

Thanks Dave!! A dislocated knee got me back to the dirt. I couldn't ride for nine months and that alone just about killed me. I had to come up with a bike that would work with my knee and dual sports had the best riding position.

Down to Crankshaft Crossing.

I took a look at the lead mines and went waaaay out a dead end road system.

Some nice sights as I head for the Eureka Valley.

I'm looking for the road that goes to the walking trail for the Marble Dunes.

I found the road and went out to the end. You have to walk from here, I'm very tempted. It's around 2:00 PM or so, but it's six miles one way from what I've been told and it's cold enough that I wouldn't survive the night if something bad happened...I'll have to wait for somebody to go with me someday. The dunes are through that low notch, waaaay the heck out there.

I'm going here for the night:

I've wanted to hike up on the dunes for a really long time, so I have a snack and decide to go for it. The wind can get really bad here and it was pretty calm at the moment, so I set up camp and put a few rocks in the tent to hold it down.

So, I picked out a dune for a goal and set out. I'm shooting one that seems to be about half the height of the tallest dune...these are the tallest dunes in California at 700 feet from the valley floor.

It really wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be.

I wanted to stay until sunset, but the wind came up and it got super cold.

I hollered a hello to some passing hikers that were camped near me.

It's time to head back to camp.

It will be dark soon...

I made it back to camp.

My camp neighbors had been on a day trip and had since returned. The girl called me over with the promise of free beer...straight to my heart...I LOVE beer!!! I went over and met Miles, Rebecca and get this...by now you all kind of know me...the little tikes name is...wait for it...ready? His name is Lyric and he's three!!!! I actually go by 'Lyrically Driven' on some other forums. It turns out that Becca was in charge of shopping for the trip, she came back with 250 beers and a 4 pack of toilet paper...I'm going to like her, plus she has the same name as my wife!!

Oh, here comes a jet...I ran for my camera, just in case he came back for another run. They don't usually come back, but for Thanksgiving he made a turn around the dunes and came back for me!!!

I've been trying to get a jet picture for over five years and maybe 12 different trips here...I'm sooo stoked!!!

Hi LB! sorry I'm late...my stupid ride gets bogged down in the rain...

(Guess I enjoyed my ADV break a little too much...)
Now I'll put on my mittens and get a cup of coffee so I can enjoy your report.

Pics look great - are you happy with the new camera??

Yippeee!!! You're back!!

Yeah, I'm really happy with this little camera. That's a gif of the stills I took of the jet. I should make it a little bigger so you can see the inverted flying into the roll he did.

It's a couple of days before Thanksgiving and I'm going to have hens for the next couple of nights.

Free beer while I get the oil going.

Oh boy, this is going to be tasty!!

Mmmmm...

I went next door and Becca introduced me to the rest of the gang. There was Tristan, Betty and Natasia, they're the ones in the video at the beginning of the report..sand boarding. Betty wiped out in the video when she hit the flat at about 40 miles per hour. Miles is a geologist and has a band, we had a lot to talk about. I'll use one of his songs later...he does surf music and lives on the beach in San Diego, he has opened for the great Dick Dale before. It was another most excellent evening.

As you know my friend, I am crazy...no heated gear and the rain gear was too bulky to take with me. No gas in Gold Point, a desperate person could probably get somebody to sell them some, but I wouldn't count on that.

Gotta run...

thrrrr Huh?rrr Whuh?rrr Hey! Hey!rrr Hey! Oh, man...

Great report, LarryBoy. Heard your bike roll by in the AM and grabbed my camera as I was saying, "oh, mannnnn". I have two pics of you leaving Saline and heading to Panamint at about 8 or 9ish in the morning on Thanksgiving day. You came in via Steel Pass and I was camped in lower camp. I soaked on Fri to find three guys who told me you hung out up there and they had a nice talking with you in the volcano. I will post that pic to your thread tomorrow.

Sorry I missed ya and glad you had a good one. I know I did.
