I'm about half done mapping Stage 3. Looks like they have split this stage so there's a paved liaison in the middle. But overall they are definately bumping up the difficulty level. There's a bit of dunes, a hefty bit of sand wash, and some AMAZING twisty mountain roads through some really beautiful desert and mountain terrain. Stage 3 is really making me wish I was racing this one!!! If I have time tomorrow I'll post some ground level photos of the route.

I'm in awe Scott. I know from your posts here that your mapping, route making, and Google Earth skills are top notch, but, in a general sense, where are you pulling the route information? From the stage maps the ASO make public and then matching to road/trails that show up via google?

Just imagine what the factory teams do to get an idea of the route. Amazing and great work to see this.

Ok, now that Stage 1 is off and running, here's my Google Earth file for that stage:
http://www.hogwildracing.com/dakar20...-Stage1Map.kml

If you can't get Google Earth to work, you can go to www.google.com, click on "Maps" at the top of the screen, then paste the above FULL link (right-click > Copy Shortcut) into the search box. That will open the file in Google Maps in your internet browser. Then make sure you are viewing it in "Satellite" view or "Earth" view so you can see the terrain.

The red line is the car/truck course. On stage 1 there are two places where the motos go a different way than the cars & trucks. Those "motos only" sections are marked in orange. Yellow is the liaisons.

I never got a look at the roadbook, so I wasn't able to add markers at each roadbook waypoint.

Enjoy!

You're crazy, Scott.

With an ear in to the right teams, you could probably finance your own effort for next year with this stuff.

I have a cell phone connection directly to the "right team" and they said no to my price. If they had said yes, this thread would not exist. I'm open to proposals from other teams.

Keep putting up what you have. ASO may comp you into the event, just so you can't give it to anyone else.

That's the whole reason I'm posting it! Not that you guys really care to see this stuff.

Two days ago I emailed the Google Earth file to someone associated with ASO. No response yet!

aren't there rules about what maps you can use and/or have in the vehicle?

im sure the factory teams do this same thing.. I have done it for every rallymoto and desert race for the last couple years I have entered (not to Scott's length) but it helps tremendously to familiarize where you will be... local landmarks, populated areas for help, shortcuts etc...

They are allowed standard maps with no notes on them. They are not allowed any type of satellite or aerial imagery. And they are not allowed any type of computer. But that all only applies to the time period when they are racing.

Indeed it can help a LOT to look the course over in Google Earth. But it's nearly impossible to figure out where the course goes with the extremely limited info ASO provides. Try mapping a 300 mile long stage when you don't know the start, finish, or many if any points in between, while there are THOUSANDS of criss-crossing roads between bivouacs. Remember, the undisclosed start and finish of each stage are almost never anywhere near the bivouacs. If I had the roadbooks well ahead of time, then it would be somewhat easier, though still very time consuming.
