Funny semi-related story. I went to the SOG outlet sale about a month ago in Lynnwood and they had everything and anything you needed or wanted at a great price. You could hold and check out every blade they sell. At the checkout counter was a box of band-aids...almost empty.

Got one similar.

A real pain to sharpen though. But when it's sharp, it stays long time.

Where did you buy the tanto? Is it the Cold Steel?

Edit: Forget it...I saw that it's the CS

fiddling with a new, unfamiliar knife is always touchy, and I can see all kinda of guys "testing" the blades

and SOG has got some very nice, very sharp stuff. I'd have liked to make it to that sale.

i have been a knife maker/gun builder & engraver for many years - i even carry a band-aid in my wallet - hey - it's going to happen - i have more than one blade get hung up in a cloth wheel & get slung across the shop! I've only had to go in for stitches once in all these years - pretty lucky really - tom

Yup. Cloth wheels and blades are a bad mix, especially if they're turning fast enough to effectively polish. I had an edge catch -- ONCE -- took a dime-sized flap of skin out of my middle finger. Now I don't polish knives anymore.

I polish all my edges, as part of my sharpening routine.

Scariest one I did was an Angus Trim broadsword for a friend. Holy hell, 4+feet of razor sharpness on both sides. Pucker factor 9 on that one.

It belonged to my Uncle and I believe it's over 50 years old (because I am and I remember him packing it since I was a kid). My aunt gave it to my when he passed on. It's the only thing I have from him, other than the scars in my hand from when he convinced me to ride one of my Grandad's coon hounds like he was a horse, who proceeded to bite the fuck out of my hand.
My Uncle Alfred was a real character. Lied his way into the Navy at 16 during WWII, retired after 25 years and pretty much fucked off the rest of his life. Fishing, Hunting, Drinking. I learned it all from him.

It is a very nice knife.
