Help talk me out of an MB5

So a beautiful MB5 (1982 of course) just came up for sale locally for a very good price and I'm trying my hardest not to buy it. But he more I read the more I want one.

I love Honda, I love vintage, I love quirky, and I love 2 smoke....

Anyone care to share their thoughts or experiences on these rare bikes.

The MB5 is a pretty nice little bike as far as I know. I've known guys with em before, they seem to be fun and pretty reliable. Some versions [the restricted ones] are slow stock, and restricted to about 35 MPH, but with a few simple mods you can very easily run 50-55 MPH, they have a 5 speed tranny afterall!

But some versions are unresteictsd, and as far as I know they top out right around 53 MPH stock, maybe 55+ MPH if you push them.

They are fun though. Also, there are a lot of mods you can do to these little things! There is a 70 cc kit availible [so you regester it as 50 cc moped but throw on a 70 cc!], pipes and all that good stuff, that can, with the right gearing make these run well over 65 MPH.

I'm sorry, but I can't talk you out of it, with these little bikes few people can! The ONLY thing that can talk you out of a scooter or something like this is the bank!

Don't do it!! Buy something sensible like a weed eater or lawn edger. You wouldn't want to be wasting your time doing something silly like riding a murder cycle when you could be maintaining a perfect lawn which will make you the envy of all your nieghbors.

I ride, Therefore I Am.

Every time I read one of these "Talk Me Out Of" type threads I start thinking about how to modify, farkle etc. the model spoken of.

Then I wonder where a nice example might be found... Sheesh!

No help talkin' out of here! Sounds like fun to me.

I spent a weekend riding one, back in the late '80s, on country roads in upstate New York.

It wasn't very smooth, or very fast...but it was a total hoot to ride.

Get it. And don't regret it.

Some legitimate reasons not to buy it:
  • You need the money for your next hit of crack (of your choice)
  • You are morbidly obese, or conversely, the Worlds Smallest Man
  • The color clashes with your riding tunic
  • The seller is also charging for 2 kilos of weed secreted in the fuel & oil tanks
  • You are allergic to the smell of 2T in the morning
  • You believe that Honda only ever made cars, & this bike thing is just a vast Korean conspiracy
  • The local speed limit is 5 MPH (I mean, who wants to ride a FAST bike slow...)

I owned one just to ride the annual True Grits 50cc Fun Run in the mountains of north Georgia. Just riding that event alone justified it's existence. What a hoot!!

I had with red stripe. Never had a minute's trouble with it.

Get it. It's a fun little bike, and you'll probably be able to find another buyer pretty easily if you want to part with it later.

Sorry about the "talking you out of it" part. This is the Wee Beastie Enabler Forum.

Like I like. Yep.
