So a friend of mines dad told me to have fun...
A good friend of mines dad has an early 90s Vespa 250. It has not been run for quite some time, and well he told me to take it to my shop and have fun. I dont think hes giving me the Vespa, probly just using my enthusiasm for bikes and mechanics to get his old scooter going again. Though this guy has surprised me in the past...
So anyway, before I load it into my pickup, Im just looking for some info about what I am getting myself into here. This guy has a good habit of taking care of his stuff so im guessing it just needs the crap blown out of the carb new plug and basic service stuff. He is just not mechanically inclined so has always payed people to do his wrenching for him. Any advice would greatly appreciated. Oh and it has been stored out of the weather, in their garage for years and for the past few its been parked in their horse trailer.

IMHO before you start spending your time and money on this Vespa you need to discuss with him exactly what he wants and what kind of budget he has for this. If he tell you that there is no budget and that you can have the Vespa then you are Golden. Otherwise, he should be willing to give you some sort of $ value that he is willing to spent for parts, etc.

Right now not running it is not worth as much to him, but after you put some time/effort/money into it, it will certainly have more value.

It might be helpful to find out just what you have there. Vespa didn't make a 250 until around 2006. In fact between around 1985 and 2001 they didn't sell any bikes in the US.
Post a picture and we can help you identify just what you have there. And have fun! |

I would start with the simple, low cost fixes of replace gasoline, remove and clean carb and it's jets, loan it a battery from one of your other rides, check the tires to see if they are safe to ride on.
Once you get it running smooth, you can determine your level of financial commitment and ownership. I am going to guess once you clean the carb and get a battery and fresh gas, you will have a running bike. What model do you have? I would guess maybe a GT200 Grantourismo. |

Well im not too worried about spending some money on it, my buddies dad gave me a car not long ago, so Im kinda thinking if I get this guy running for it will be like returning the favor. Anyway this weekend I will be up there and I will get pics and figure a few things out.

I have got to agree with this. I mean we all love to see some pictures, there is absolutely no doubt about that, but its not ALL about pictures. But we sure wouldn't mind a couple. |
