This films from Akira Kurosawa are cinematographic legends

Seven Samurai
(Shichinin no samurai)

Rashomon
(Rashômon)

Yojimbo
(Yojimbo the Bodyguard)

Sanjuro (Tsubaki Sanjûrô)

Kagemusha (The Shadow Warrior)

Hidden Fortress (Kakushi-toride no san-akunin)

NetFlix has a few other from him, But I have never see them so I can not really recommend them.

Excellent Film - In English with some subtitles.

The (new) Karate Kid 6.2 (4*'s barely)

The Spy Next Door (5.2) (3*'s but a good laugh)

I liked the new film. Not really a remake and should have been called Kung Fu Kid. What spoiled this one for me was the hero and his girl needed to be 3 or 4 years older to make it more believable.

Beat the Drum (South African) 6.9 - "Young Musa is orphaned after a mysterious illness strikes his village in KwaZulu Natal. To help his grandmother, Musa sets out for Johannesburg with his father's last gift, a tribal drum, in search of work and his uncle." (+4*'s)

The Snow Walker (7.5) - "A pilot and his passenger struggle for survival after crashing in the Arctic tundra." 4*'s

...looking at my list on page 1 I'd say the films rated by IMDB at 8.0 or higher are the 5* movies - the notable exception is "The World's Fastest Indian which they rate at 7.9 as this is one of my favorite films (but we all have our own ratings anyway).

Amazing movie with Elijah Wood and Eugene Hütz (the lead singer of Gogol Bordello) basically where Elijah's character goes to find out about the woman who saved his grandfather from the Holocaust. It is a serious movie at some points due to the subject matter but there are a lot of great and funny scenes.
Thanks, N&V! Watched it last night on your rec. Darned good for a directorial debut. I thought the grandfather was great. The whole thing was perhaps a bit too obviously Wes Anderson influenced, but a good watch nevertheless. Going to have to read the book, now...

Okay if you don't call that a remake, I don't know what is, well except for the "Wax On, wax Off" is pretty much the same thing, yes different country and ethnics but the plot is pretty much the same number by number.

My top picks

Obvious choices:
The Big Lebowski
Blade Runner
Dust To Glory
Groundhog Day
The Jerk
Kite Runner

Less obvious choices:
Under Suspicion (mystery drama with great actors)
Amelie (nice eye candy, quirky, foreign)
The devils Backbone (if you like scary, foreign)
A Perfect World (Kevin Costner is escaped convict, kidnaps kid)

I just found this movie call..

Law Abiding Citizen is kind of a police thriller but also very twisted and fun to watch

Groovy thread. Our DVD player is not currently speaking to the surround sound/audio doohickey, and we've been running really low on streaming content.

Warning: Content may included repeated movies, because I didn't read this entire thread. Also, I am a girl, so expect some chick choices. In no particular order...

The Big Lebowski
March of the Penguins
Best In Show
Friday
Boys Don't Cry
Full Metal Jacket
Au Revoir Les Enfants
Sleepers
Steel Magnolias
Babies
Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil
Dangerous Liaisons
Fierce People
The Right Stuff
Sunshine Cleaning
Julie & Julia
Blazing Saddles
Strange Brew
The September Issue
Vanity Fair
A Fish Called Wanda

Blah blah blah...

PS - UP is the most emotionally draining movie I have ever seen. :)

Not on instant, but Pink Floyd: The Wall, under the appropriate mind altering influences, trumps UP
