Been borrowing a bluray player from my parents ever since they bought a newer one.

I found out why a few months back as the one I borrowed doesn't have enough system memory to make it all the way through a movie without running out. Usually about half way.

Back before Christmas my playstation got the YLOD and due to a limited amount of funds and various other life changes I just stuck it in a box. Ever since I've mostly lost interest in video games. I still enjoy them, but I've just got too many other things going on to have it worth being something to put money into.

A couple of days ago I decided to dig it out to either fix it or trash it and sell the games.

Did some research and found that most likely it's failure was due to the solder on the GPU and CPU not having lead in it (because it's marketed to kids under 12) so it has a tendency to fracture after a given amount of use and cause a "general hardware failure" condition (IE the yellow light).

So I borrowed my brothers two stage Milwaukee heat gun, stripped the machine down, and spent about 2min heating the mother board on the low (750*) setting and then another 4-5min heating the GPU and CPU specifically to reheat and revoke the solder to bridge the connections. Let it sit for 30min untouched and out it back together.

SUCCESS!!!!

She lives once again!!

Now I can ditch this POS samsung bluray player!

Nice cooking! Next time put it in the oven and turn it once at 15 mins.. It brings out the flavors better...

Some people suggested that, some with disastrous results.

You can honestly blame the EU for the lack of lead or Nvidia for being too stupid to build a GPU package.

The US passed a series of laws a few years ago to eliminate all lead from kids toys (under 12 years old). Since a lot of gamesare suitable for everyone, that includes the electronics in the consoles.

So now we have a combo of super powerful heat generating gaming systems that are using inferior solder to hold the electronics together.

Even if the system never over heats, the cycles of the electronics heating up and cooling off eventually breaks the solder connections on various electronic components and results in the Red Ring of Death/Yellow Light of Death.

Armored Core is one of my favorite PS games.....ever. It was almost as good as the Colony Wars series.

It's hard as hell to play with no analog sticks though.

Plus it looks terrible on a 50" screen.

wow, I forgot how good fallout 3 is

After getting sucked in to black ops, then going back and playing the modern warfares over the last month, I was bored last night and decided to start a new game of FO3. Man, I forgot how good that game rolls along. I played for what seemed a little while, and figured I'd stop for the night, possibly go catch the 11 news before bed. Went upstairs, and it was 1:50.

I loved that game too! I really need to get it for my PS3 though. I can't seem to get it to work anymore on my laptop. Maybe next fall, no time to play it now that summer is coming!

Currently without a windows installation and I'm trying to take a break from gaming, as I am very busy with other things lately (I'm also into motorbikes by the way )...

Cold turkey has worked fine but the notifications from this thread keep bringing me back.. Now I have withdrawal symptoms...

I'm torn between Portal 2 and LA Noire. Amazon has a deal on LA Noir where you get instant $15 credit. I'll wait on Portal 2 a bit longer. LA Noir comes out tomorrow!

I dont understand why rockstar used the PS2 graphics engine for LANoir.

Even red dead redemption looked better.

The engine is completely new as the technology for facial recognition also is. Rockstar isn't really known for cutting-edge graphics in any of their games though. I think this is Team Bondi's first game. It's also getting a lot of good buzz from the media.

BTW: any official clips you see are typically done on the Xbox.

Wow, that's even worse.

The faces do look better, but just about any other game beats the pants off of it with facial detail.

Everything else looks like a late PS2 game rendered in a higher definition.

The concept of the game sounds really cool, but all the previews I see I just cand get past it.
