I almost bought this bike a few weeks. The FI snatchiness made me shy away from the bike. Even the carbed 950 bikes needed aftermarket cans and carb mods to run smoothly. It's a shame as these bikes are great machines. Instead, I decided to get the GS and use my MS 1200 as my hooligan bike.

My 2005 carb model isn,t snatchy in the slightest infact I recon the carb models are about the finest thing about.
As for the SMR after a day or so a little smoothness with the right hand completely did away with the snatchy sensation and this was on a crappy road with various recently removed mudslides in the rain.
Sounds like a snap decision after an hours riding to ditch one of the worlds best truly fun motorcycles.

I can't understand how this fuel injection phenomenon
can happen with a mass produced bike.
Is there a difference in the individual bikes?
Or is the difference in the perception of the riders?
Mine is the only one I've ever ridden, so I can't say.

I think I have seen at least half a dozen posts describing 990
fuel injection as "snatchy" since I bought mine, and yet
that thought NEVER ENTERED MY MIND from the very first ride.
My initial evaluation was "perfection."
I was extremely relieved while test riding it on a twisty West
Virginia paved road, because I had just traveled over 450 miles
to check it out. It felt like the most perfect bike I had ever ridden,
so I bought it.

Later, I felt the need for slight bit more control at on-off throttle
ONLY on gravel and loose dirt roads, but I had already been through
that sensation on my 690 SMC, so I knew exactly what to do about it:
Order another cammed throttle from G2ergo.
If my intention had been to ride it strictly on paved roads,
I wouldn't have bothered.

Its all perception. We compare the throttle in hand to every throttle we own or have owned. Thats why you get extreme opposite opinions like, "Best ever" to, "So bad it almost killed me".

For me the FI is "smooth as silk" and I draw this conclusion because my previous street ride was a 2005 CBR1000RR. Because compared to that bike's FI "it is."

P.S. I loved my CBR, snatchy throttle and all.

Hey Mike,
I just rode the 990 smr at americade and have to say that is the most fun I have had riding a bike. The demo guys lead a very spirited ride so I got to get on it and must say the handling and power was amazing. I went back 4 times to test ride.. Now I see why you love the KTM and it just made my BMW GSA feel so much heavier on the way home. I would not get rid of the BMW but just need to figure out a way to add the KTM. It would make next years ADV rally much more fun.

Went out this afternoon for a spin that included a little town work,some winding dual carridgeway with a couple of contraflow thrown in for good luck.Then onto some classic Antioquia winding A road out towards the airport and Rio Negro.A beautiful sunny day with plenty of Sunday traffic!!!
This is in Colombia by the way so add all the other usual fun stuff about riding in South America.
So how did we get on with the injection,well just fine.Plenty of overtaking,waiting to overtake,Sunday drivers,bad surfaces.You know the usual bullshit involved in driving a bike.
Now that my hand is in so to speak the fueling is as smooth as you,d like it to be.Just roll on from 2k onwards and it,s great no problem at all.I guess if you,re jerky with it it,ll be jerky with you!
Remember if you crack that sucker open it,ll be wheelying straight off the throttle.That I guess for those of you who aren,t familiar with the Supermoto thang is the idea! It,s a fearsome bit of kit.
Treat it with respect and you,ll be fine,Go at it like an English lover and surprise surprise you,ll get a jerky reaction!

My next point of interest would be what pipes are people using on the SMR?
My 950 ran way cooler and had a health dose of power added with the Akropovics on her(no baffles!you can get away with that shit down here)
The Akros look cool and no doubt do an exellent job,but the buggers cost $1500
What are the alternatives?

I didnt mean to imply that the carbed 950 was snatchy. It is definitely not sntachy. I thought that the 950 motor had poor low RPM fueling that was rough and not very smooth and progressive until over 4k.

Fixin, I just watched a video on the Aprilla Dorsoduro 1200... As a fellow Ex- Megamoto rider, you might want to look into this bike-when it gets to our shores!

For those of you who want to try the opposite of snatchy,
try test riding a 750 Dorsoduro.
I was completely underwhelmed by its fuel injection
and throttle response.
Whack open the throttle, and it just sits there for a moment,
and then grrrrrrraaaaadually takes off.
I just couldn't live like that.
