Black Hills National Forest: GPX?

Any GPX routes or tracks w/in BHNF much appreciated. Two Flatisatan inmates leaving 6/29 for the area w/two EXC's in the truck.

I was just there last week. The forest service has mapped all of the "legal" trails and have them set up to load into your gps.

Go here for the free download. It is about half way down the page:

Also, you now need a off road permit. It costs $20 for seven days or $25 for a year. Go here:

The permit can be bought on line or at a ranger station. Call first to make sure they have them.

And, they give you a map with the permit but it's easier to download a smaller map in color from the forest service.

Very slick. However you do not download "trails", you down a whole new map with motorized trails showing.

It would be great if all forests had this service. Garmin maps show roads and trails that lead right into Wilderness.

I highly recommend the Centennnial trail, but that's the most traveled trail I saw. Many of the trails were overgrown. I only did a small chunk before I got injured and ran out of time. Also, if you need a tire recommendation, trials tires seemed to be popular with the locals and worked very well for me with all the granite (MT43). Bring cash for the permit.

I wish I'd known about the GPS thing.

You are correct. Still it's a neat map and very helpfull.

I also wish the rest of the forests had that feature. Makes me wonder why one does and others don't.

Jeeze, althouh I'm a self-anointed Zumologist, I had never before 'put' maps in my GPS! Marvelous! Thanks, Layton, and to the other imates who commented and thus aided my understanding of the deal.

I join y'all in wondering why all NF's don't take this step. If their goal is to encourage legal use of the forest, they ought to take this relatively inexpensive measure to at least let us gps geeks know where they are!

I do have an additional question, hoping y'all can help. I like to use MapSource to plan out a route. While the individual roads and trails appear on the screen of my Zumo (thanks to my loading the map(s) into my zumo, I can't yet get those roads and trails to appear in my MapSource.

When I attempt to download the map from my zumo, mapsource says "some maps could not be opened because the following MapSource products are not installed: 2010BHNFTravelMap.

How do I fix that?

Which is even better than downloading Tracks. All your track memory is still available.

I have been working on a set of Tracks for all Open routes in a So Cal OHV area but it will suck up all the Track space. This is waht the public needs from every forest. Bettery yet, Why isn't Garmin developing it?
