Norcal Coast to Yosemite suggestions

Doing a ride from Whidbey Island (my house) down the coast via HWY101 through WA, OR and to NorCal. Taking a route that involves the Lost Coast, Ave of Giants and eventually down HWY 1 to Fort Bragg.

From there I need to traverse east to the Yosemite area around Columbia/Jamestown area where I will rendezvous and base camp. My thoughts are to hit HWY 20 east to Grass Valley then on HWY 49 south towards Angels Camp.

Is this reasonable? What are areas that are must do along this latitude? What are areas to avoid?

Thanks for any input.

Hwy. 20 is not so good...commuted part of it for a year and drove it on the job a lot. If you are headed for the Gold Country from Ft. Bragg. there are some better options...from Ft. Bragg head south on Hwy. 1 down to Hwy. 128 and take that east all the way to Winters. Not sure what would be best from there, hopefully someone else will chime in, but 128 is a great ride for that entire stretch, waaay better than 20. If you go that way make a stop in Boonville and Winters is worth checking out too...

you could take 128 from Mendocino to Cloverdale, Healdsburg, then Calistoga.... at Calistoga go east across the valley and take Silverado Trail south to hwy 12.... you can then take 12 across the central valley to 49... this would take you through a lot of mendocino, sonoma, napa wine country... some occasional twisties and good scenery... getting across the central valley is a slog no matter how you go...

Thanks for the inputs. 128 looks like a good option to the 12. There is some good bouldering on the way also to break up the ride. Hopefully the coast is not fogged in the entire time.

I would avoid hwy 12 across the valley. a few too many head on accidents for my taste. although there is a great railroad museum along it if you are into that. 128 from the coast and through the wine country is a good route, if you go that way, fight the traffic through Sacramento and then take 16 up to 49.
