Good call sighting it in close, I have two centerfires with scopes but I'd have to zero either in close so that it wasn't a "poke and pray." |

I use to trap a lot. steel foothold not cage. Usually a skunk wont spray unless it sees something to spray at or something like a head shot triggers it.My Dad taught me to shoot them through the lungs at a distance with .22 shorts when they were trapped. It worked most of the time. They usually don't spray when the a leghold hits them but don't walk up on them.

![]() I'm not one to shoot a new gun in fury without some familiarity - I'm going to the pit this morning with some paper plates, maybe I should draw skunks on them. |

I'd say put some more rounds through it and get it good and broken in. |

I would think at only 25 yards you would not even need the scope....unless you want it for just the fun factor and I understand that. I had a opossum that was getting very nasty around my new shop....for critters I usually try to just let them be, but when they start hanging around your front door and tehy will not leave and get nasty they have to be delt with. I don't think the opossum I was having trouble with was right in the head...he was out in day light and that is pretty odd for these guys. I put him down with my then new SVT at about the same distance you are talking about....then put him in the burn pile. Called the county to see if they wanted to come and check him out but they said just dispose of him....I figured they would want to test to see if he was rabid or not....he was just not acting like any other opossum I had come across.

I actually like the plaster stocks too. I put one on a project build on a 10FP I did a while back. it ended up as a 1/4moa gun.

What caliber? Above, my black gun is a factory .223 but the green one started life as an '06. Now it's a 6mm Ackley, fast-twist, for loooooong dogs.

I like the looks too, it has the classic "rifle" look to it. I'm not big on the synthetic stocks either.
Well, we had to walk into the pit, Irene washed out a few culverts on the way in, and they haven't been repaired yet. So, no 1/4 moa hits, as I was just standing there shooting, with no rest. That being said, I didn't touch the scope, these shots were taken at 45 yards. I think I like this gun already. ![]() The low one on the wood stake was on purpose, after shooting up the plate. I figured it would break it off, but not with FMJ loads. ![]() I think with a bench rest this gun would have groups of 1" or so. I'm really pleased, it racks rounds in the chamber nice, and shoots really well, right off the rack, I didn't touch anything. I guess whoever put that sticker on the scope knew what they were doing! |
