Looks like units sold. In numeric expressions, EU and the US use periods and commas oppositely.
$3.99 looks like €3,99 (except for currency conversion)

It's everywhere the same, here in Europe.
Germany is even more clear. Didn't find the statistic from 2010. But BMW held the first 5 places in a row, and I think 8 out of Top10....

I'm surprised the R1200R is that popular. I rented one recently in Italy (when my R1200GS broke...) and it was pretty meh.

I'm surprise that the big GS is so popular in Europe. Almost no unpaved roads, small streets, super tight packed traffic. If I move back there I'd get a more sport touring oriented bike, like a Multistrada or even something smaller to filter through the traffic.

If reality seems to be in odd with your view of the world, it might very well be that your view is incorrect.
I don't recognice Europa at all fro your description.
Alps? The Appeninni? Karawanken? The Julian Alps? Massif Centrale? Black Forest?

This is the list of all "motorcycles" (not only 12GS competitors).
Removed from the list are all 50 cc, and all scooters.
Over here, scooters can be found from 50 to 800 cc, but they are in a separate list.
The top seller on the scooters list is the Honda SH-300 with more than 17.000 units

The list appears in each monthly issue of Due Route (two wheels); the biggest Italian motorcycle magazine.
It doesn't show the last 12 months, but rather the sales this year.
That makes the list in the first half of the year useless; but, hey, this is Italy!

Riding the big girl in Europe would be utterly fantastic. Savines-le-Lac to Reallon and then to the end of the road at Gournier and then hiking to the Rhododendron forest comes to mind. This would be a spectacular ride on a narrow paved road then over to a really cool dirt road up to a ski area. Or how about Forcaquier to Riez to Castellane then south through Mons and onto the Cote d'Azur. The big girl would fit in France nicely!
