Perhaps my view is not incorrect but limited for the type of riding I was doing while living in Madrid, basically commuting and riding on the twisties during the weekends. The traffic was insane and I can't imagine riding through it with a huge bike.
Here in NYC, I never commute with the bike. I use it for long trips and dual sport rides
Is there any good dual sport rides in Europe?

It doesn't show the last 12 months, but rather the sales this year.
That makes the list in the first half of the year useless; but, hey, this is Italy!

The 1000 haven't been sold in the UK atleast for a few years now, probably hasn't been sold in the EU. It doesn't pass emissions anymore. 650 is obviously still sold though.

I, among others, have become a BMW cruise control enthusiast. What is the likelihood that electronic cruise control will be offered on the new GS?

Thanks to competition / pressure, from Triumph's adoption of cruise control on their new 1200 Adventure, probably a pretty good chance of BMW offering it as an option, so as not to arouse the wrath of the purists.

If they go with some kind of throttle by wire system, I'd say there's an excellent chance that it will be at least an option. If they stay with the current cable system, I doubt it.

You'd think that they could at least put a friction knob on the throttle somewhere, though.

They've done away with that since the late '80s, supposedly due to liability. They even quit building the throttle housing with the hole for the friction screw. As to the ride by wire system, both that and the electronic cruise seems to work very well on the K16, so offering E-cruise on the forthcoming GS would seem simple enough. I'd probably opt for it.

... you have to try to ride a bike in Rome!!! Even the GS has a hard time against roman holes (should I say pools ???), paved roads (san pietrini) and ... well jumping on/off pedestrian walking toavoid traffic!!!!

LOL I have to agree. I have a 09 GSA and that is pleanty to handle. Is it really better to have more horsepower every year? Or is that just marketing to "keep up" with other brands.

And with the gsa getting larger and larger every year will it still be considered a dual sport ??

Most GSA riders I know just ride their GSA on the street like most American SUV drivers to where the only dirt road they will see is the corner of their driveway they run over.
