MapSource discontinued?
I read on one of the Garmin forums that MapSource was no longer being supported by Garmin. They are moving their efforts to BaseCamp. I was a MS user and since reading the news have downloaded BC (free). It is both better and worse than MS. Perhaps as I learn it better BC will be only better.

That's what I'm hoping too. I'm not even too fond of the last versions of Mapsource. 6.13.7 is still my fave. The track rendering on the newer one, like BC, is too crude/gaudy. As with a lot of sortware changes, it seems to be change for the sake of change rather than for the better. My $0.02, YMMV.

That's great advice for today. But what about tomorrow when BC is on version 9.??? and MS is still 3.???
I would hope that BC is a move forward just like when we convert from XP to Vista to Windows 7. Or from one feline to another on MAC. The move is always painful. But, if we refuse to change then the world moves on without us and one day we wake up and find everyone doing things we can't. I'm 69 and still looking for change. Just my opinion. Please don't take offense.

I'm confused... Are you advocating for no change (first post), or change (above post)? |

I'm spending the winter learning basecamp for the Mac. Long time user of Mapsource on a pc, but the company grew up and no longer allows personal software on company computers. So screw it! I like my MacBook Pro a lot better anyway...and basecamp is starting to come together for me.

I DO think keeping up with the changes in software and hardware will benefit the user in the long run. I was/am a MS user. I am converting to BC. I am having a bit of a learning curve but have laid out one route of 130 miles, downloaded it into my Garmin 660 and it worked. Now working or changing waypoint information and tweaking other things. I have both Windows 7 and MAC Lion. Both with BC. There was no MS for MAC. I find the MAC a lot easier to work with in BC. But I'm sure it's just a "getting used to the bells and whistles" thing.

Does it really matter if MS is "supported"? It's not like they provided any "support" for it before. If you like it, use it for a few years. It'll work, whether or not it remains officially endorsed by Garmin. If you don't like it, use something else like BC.
Fret about bigger issues, like whether a neighbor's dog is pooping in your yard. |

There will also be a few changes coming when Garmin releases v3.3.x. They are suppose to be working on some video Tutorials which I would expect to be available at that time or thereabouts.
Cheers,

I just upgraded my maps to Korea City Navigator v.9, and the new maps won't work with Mapsource (no way to unlock them), but they work perfectly in Basecamp as long as the gps unit is connected to the PC. I've found file management to be odd in Basecamp, but other than that it seems to be okay, and in some ways better than mapsource. I figure I'll be fine with it once I've gotten around the learning curve.

Mapsource will not download info from a GPS to Mapsource and unlock it. You have to have it native on your PC.
