Looks to me like she was putting her hands to the side of her helmet and inside the head restraint portion of her seat to keep her arms from flailing around and causing injury. Intelligent and instinctive reaction, not fear.

I've noticed that these newer drivers that have never driven into a concrete wall are steering into the slide instead of locking it down and spinning it. KB got away with one the other day.

Remember when Nigel Mansell steered into a slide at Phoenix and punched a hole through the wall going backwards?

Used to be a common topic at ovals by the commentators...lock it down and spin it to save the car.

Yea, they all seem to think they can save it............till they can't. Spinning it may have kept her off the wall, but who knows in the few second you have to react.

The commentators mentioned that there have been a lot of bad wrecks in that area before it was paved and the walls installed. I remember Rusty Wallace's car getting torn to pieces in that area when it was grass.

The car just about gained speed as it went for the wall. 12 years ago and that would have been fatal.

I agree. That was a mighty hard hit. That's why I got emotional. The track level replay shows how fast that car was going when it hit the barrier. DW said 180 mph, a media report said 150 mph. Whichever, not so many years ago could have been a killer.

Nah, she was just putting her hands either side of her helmet to cushion her head from the blow she could see coming.

I hadn't appreciated how small she is. A Fox sports columnist says her official stats are 5'2" and 100 lbs. He says it's likely closer to 5'0" and 90 lbs.

My buddy just made the comment I think we'll hear more than once: NASCAR fixed it.

Well, it is Juniors car...the fix is in, 49 other drivers were dragging the brakes.

For the record, I do realize she was just getting her hands out of the way.

I was just saying the angle made it look like she was covering her eyes. I'm predicting that her detractors will be circulating pictures of that moment.

I have heard that for a long time as well; back to the Petty days, and probably ever since the sport was started.

Anything can happen, but getting 42 other type A personalities, their crews, car owners and sponsors to agree to hold back would take a Herculean effort and Warren Buffet's bank account.

Can you imagine them telling Bobby Allison, Cale Yarborough, David Pearson, Junior Johnson, Dave Marcis, Buddy Baker or Dale Sr. to let somebody else win? You'd get less of a fight if you talked bad about their momma's.

Size doesn't matter as much in NASCAR. Cars have to make minimum weight with driver in position. In IndyCar, when she started, it was an advantage. Lots of complaining changed that.

If she does not get caught up in something, she has a good chance of winning in that Earnhardt car. Cup too, with RHMxSHR gear.
