Narrow lanes and groovy bridges - Buckland Monachorum

Frankly, just go there. Preferably out of season.

Hexagram 42

According to Charles Henderson’s “Old Cornish Bridges and Streams” the name Tamar is said to mean Great Water.

Also, according to Richard Wilhelm’s translation of the “I Ching” the Judgement of Hexagram 42 denotes -
“INCREASE. It furthers one
To undertake something.
It furthers one to cross the great water.”

So I rode Johanna the T100C over the New Bridge at Gunnislake and followed the front wheel for a bit. This new gate and fence caught my eye. The location is a steepish wooded valley just across the Great Water, in West Devon.

Panters Bridge near Warleggan

Regular readers will remember that Warleggan is twinned with Narnia. Panters Bridge is a checkpoint on the Lands End Trial.

Nice Bridge

This was on the Hochi minh trail in Laos last December.

This was one of many dodgy bridges..

It broke...

Let's be careful out there.

Not a million yards from Grenofen is this neglected, well-used bridge.

An ill-considered trifle it works hard for its living, and does a competent job.

Concrete progress

Henderson has this to say, “At Palmers Bridge the infant stream is crossed by the highway from Launceston to Bodmin. This bridge once had five clapper openings, but a flood destroyed it on 4th October, 1880, and it has been rebuilt.”

The way we bridge now

In America there are covered bridges. These create a shady, cool space over the sheltered deck with a light-at-the-end-the-tunnel feel. As far as I know in Cornwall the nearest bridgely space we have to this is usually part of one of our many Ugly Economic Concrete Bridges.
