The article says "burned kerosene mixed with motor oil". That is the nice thing about a diesels. Or at least the older ones.

Dammit! Getting sidetracked again.

Too much Neat Stuff comes up on a "ford van pictures" search.

Idea time. for gas savings.
Take one of these

And put the 2.4L 4 cylinder motor and trans from a tacoma in it?

Would it pull it or is this old van too heavy for that trans?

I cant see that being a savings . The cost of the motor and trans , plus a van , plus the time . Might as well look for a toyota van , maybe find an AWD version .

Why a Tacoma 4cyl? Any particular reason, or do you already have an extra one laying around or what? If not, the 4WD 4cyl version of the 3RZ is punched out to 2.7L and fuel economy is pretty good, but like most gas engines, really starts to drop-off when pulling any kind of heavy loads. The 5spd transmissions are pretty tough, and you can get an adapter from Marlin to put a stronger V6 5spd behind those engines. All that said, not a swap that I'd go out of my way to make happen. Would much rather plop-in a small diesel engine. Maybe even something like a chevy 6.2/6.5L diesel V8. Lotos of them available through military surplus, many freshly rebuilt and ready to go. Not many people want them because they don't make a ton of power and they got kind of a bad rap (mostly undeserved), but fuel economy is not too bad if that's your main objective.

Buy plenty of ear plugs with that diesel up in the cab with you.

I have the 2.4 in a truck already. But I need to haul more people and dogs and stuff now.
