Three bits of Advice:

One- Use a light-weight dual sport (400 pounds or less including motorcycle and packs and gear). Do not get bogged down with a behemoth adventure bike that heavily restricts your exploration of the spectacular terrain you'll be exposed to.

Two- No Hotels. EVER. Camp the entire way. Or find locals to bunk down with. Your experience will be way more soul-fulfilling.

Three- Learn Spanish if you are not already fluent.
